the storm is brewing in the gulf… and suddenly, everyone is thinking about generators. 👀🌪️

if you’ve been saying, “we really need to get a generator,” this is your sign.

arc electric + lighting can have your generator installed as soon as next week.

we know a storm changes the conversation quickly. when the forecast starts looking questionable, generators suddenly become the hottest item in texas. and that’s exactly when you need to be careful about who you hire.

when you’re shopping for a generator, don’t just look at the price.

look at who is installing it.

here are a few things every homeowner should ask before signing a contract:

✔️ is the contractor properly licensed for the work being performed?

✔️ are they fully insured?

✔️ what type of wiring are they installing?

✔️ is it 100% copper or are they using copper-clad aluminum?

✔️ who is actually performing the installation?

✔️ does the company have experience with generator installations and service?

✔️ are they going to be around after the storm is over?

because here’s the truth:

the cheapest generator installation can become very expensive when corners are cut.

at arc electric + lighting, we believe your backup power system should be installed with the same level of care we would demand for our own homes.

100% copper wiring.
quality equipment.
professional installation.
experienced electricians.
no shortcuts.

and right now, we have most generator sizes and brands in stock, which means we can move quickly while others are scrambling to locate equipment.

so if you’ve been waiting…

don’t wait for the power to go out.

skip the frantic internet searches.
skip the questionable contractors.
skip the “cash deal” guy who suddenly has a generator available.

just call arc electric + lighting.

we’ll help you determine what your home actually needs, walk you through your options, and get the process moving.

🌪️ storm coming?
⚡ power outages on your mind?
🏡 tired of worrying about losing power?

let’s get your backup power handled before the weather makes the decision for you.

Today, I received a text message from a client sharing heartbreaking news: her friend’s home reportedly burned down due to a faulty generator installation.

This is real.

It’s devastating, and it is a serious reminder that generator installations are not something to take lightly, cut corners on, or hand off to whoever offers the lowest price. A generator can be an incredible investment—providing comfort, security, and power when your family needs it most—but only when it is properly designed, permitted, installed, and inspected.

One important thing our community needs to understand: **being a generator dealer does not automatically make someone a licensed electrical contractor.**

A company may sell generators, promote generators, or even be authorized to distribute a particular brand. That does not necessarily mean they are legally qualified, licensed, insured, or properly trained to perform the electrical work required to connect that generator safely to your home.

That distinction can be deceiving, especially for homeowners who assume that buying from a generator dealer means the installation is automatically covered by qualified electrical professionals. It is not always the case. This is exactly why we put so much emphasis on education. We do not want anyone to be hurt, lose their home, or face a preventable financial disaster because they were not given the full picture before making a decision.

Before hiring anyone, ask direct questions:

- Are you a properly licensed **electrical contractor** in this state and locality?
- Can you provide your active license number so I can verify it?
- Do you carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance?
- Will you obtain all required permits and schedule the necessary inspections?
- Who, specifically, is performing the electrical work?
- Do you have experience with generator transfer switches, load calculations, grounding, bonding, utility connections, and applicable electrical codes?
- Will I receive a written contract, scope of work, warranty, and proof of insurance?

It is also important to understand the insurance risk. If a fire, electrical failure, injury, or other major loss occurs, your homeowners insurance company will investigate. If they determine that the work was completed by someone who was not properly licensed, insured, permitted, or qualified for the job, it may complicate the claim—and in some situations, a claim could be denied.

Even if coverage is available, homeowners may still be left dealing with deductibles, increased premiums, difficult claims processes, and the stress of rebuilding. When work is performed by a legitimate, licensed electrical contractor, there is usually an accountable professional and an insured business behind the work. In many cases, that means you may be able to pursue the contractor’s insurance or hold the responsible party accountable rather than relying solely on your own homeowners policy.

No one should have to learn these lessons after a tragedy.

A generator installation involves much more than placing a unit outside and running a few wires. It must be installed according to electrical code, manufacturer requirements, local regulations, fuel and clearance rules, and the specific needs of the home. Improper wiring, undersized equipment, missing safety devices, poor grounding, incorrect transfer equipment, or unpermitted work can create serious fire, shock, carbon monoxide, and backfeed hazards.

We stress this because we care about safety—not because we want to scare anyone. We want homeowners to be informed, protected, and confident in the people they hire.

Please do your research. Verify licenses. Confirm insurance. Make sure permits are pulled. And most importantly, make sure your generator is installed by an actual licensed electrical contractor—not simply an electrician, not a general contractor, and not someone who sells generators without the proper electrical contracting credentials.

Your family’s safety, your home, and your peace of mind are worth far more than cutting corners.

Be safe friends. 🖤

🚨 a generator inspection can reveal more than whether it starts.

we recently received a call from a realtor requesting an inspection of a standby generator for a real estate transaction. this was not an installation completed by arc electric & lighting.

during our multi-point inspection, arc electric + lightingdition, functionality, safety concerns, and installation requirements. we help determine whether a unit may be worth repairing or replacing—but we never guarantee future performance.

in this case, the generator did
start and had a few concerns that could potentially be addressed if the goal is simply to have a functioning generator.

however, the larger concern was the installation itself.

as shown in the photo, the left side of this generator is too close to the brick wall. generator manufacturers generally require a ✨minimum of 3 feet of clearance on both sides and in front of the unit.✨

proper clearance is especially important near the exhaust area for ventilation, heat dissipation, service access, and overall safety.

notably, the manufacturer warranty is void, this means the homeowner is responsible for all repair parts and labor when needed.

at arc electric + lighting, we will never install a generator against electrical code or manufacturer requirements.
sometimes that means we may lose a job—and that’s okay. even when a customer urgently wants backup power, we will not choose an installation method that compromises safety, code compliance, or the long-term reliability of their investment.

a generator is a long-term investment, and an improper installation can create unexpected expenses and even affect a real estate closing. while relocating a generator may be an option when there is adequate space available, that can become an important financial consideration at the closing table.

when you choose arc electric & lighting, you can have confidence that your generator installation will be completed with the proper clearances, code requirements, and manufacturer specifications in mind—so you don’t run into these issues when it’s time to buy or sell a home.

we stand behind our work, for life.
