What if a 3D-printed aerospace component could be qualified while it was being built?

NASA is exploring exactly that with its latest "born qualified" additive manufacturing initiative.

The program uses real-time, layer-by-layer inspection to monitor metal additive manufacturing during the build- helping identify potential issues before the part is finished.

For flight-critical components, that's a major shift.

Instead of relying primarily on testing after manufacturing, the industry is moving toward capturing more quality data during the manufacturing process itself.

Reshoring is putting a bigger spotlight on material traceability.

For aerospace and defense manufacturers, sourcing domestic or qualifying-country material is only part of the equation.

You also need to be able to prove it.

Heat certifications. Material Test Reports. Chemistry and mechanical test results. Melt information. Chain of custody.
