Every decision needs to start with a goal. So if you’re on the market for a new furnace, boiler, or ac… what are your goals?

Some people are after efficiency, some warranty, and others are all about the rebate.

But there are some other worthy considerations. How about reliability? What about repairability? If you take the time to really ponder it, you might find that the most efficient doesn’t have the lowest cost of ownership. You might be surprised by what isn’t covered in that long warranty. What about availability of parts? Getting the part shipped from the manufacture free of charge might sound great until you realize that the furnace isn’t going to work until UPS drops off the part next week sometime.

Walking in the door of a commercial building today and I heard an unusual sound coming from the boiler room. On the other side of the door is a high pressure steam boiler and I was pretty sure that something was leaking. Steam that hot and under that much pressure is invisible, dangerous, even deadly. I grabbed a broom and started moving it ahead of me, waiting for the pitch of sound to change or the steam to hit the bristles. Finally located the leak. If you watch the video, you’ll notice that you can only see the leak when it momentarily condenses on the broom. That would have taken my skin right off if I had used my hand instead of the broom.

Working in a house today, came out of the basement and little girl (4-5) says, “red light”.

I stopped, looked at her and she says, “green light”

I made lots of trips in and out so I was waiting for an opportunity. As I emerged from the basement again, she’s walking across the living room, so I said, “red light”. She stopped and when I said “green light, she walked over and gave me a high five.

We have cars that can easily exceed the speed limit and houses with an extra bedroom.

We are accustomed to extra capacity and we expect performance in the things we buy.

I properly sized air conditioner doesn’t have that much extra capacity though. They are intended to run long cycles to MAINTAIN comfort. Programs that turn your ac off as needed to reduce demand on the grid often mean that you’ll be uncomfortable for hours after it comes back on.

The smart thermostat dynamic is new but these programs havd been tried before and were a complete failure.

Call today, no water. Found the pump was powered but not running. Power source is in the barn so hike out there to kill the power. Well is in the basement with a hole in the porch above Pulled the pump and then it started to rain. As I’m connecting and wiring the new pump, distant thunder.

By the time I got the pump back in the well, the thunder is getting closer. On my way back out to the barn, a huge crack of lighting scared the daylights out of me.

Am I done? No, of course not. Walked back to the house to find water spraying where the copper tubing broken at the tank.

Back out to the barn… tubing replaced and one more trip to the barn to turn everything back on.

I’m wet, muddy, and bleeding somewhere, but the water is on and I’m headed for lunch.

My Dad installed this underground line in 1984.
