A little throwback to last week, when WVU Baseball defeated Kentucky in the NCAA Regional game while proudly wearing their Coal Rush uniforms.

Seeing a talented group of young men represent our state while honoring one of its most important industries was a moment worth celebrating. We're proud of the country roads that lead us home, but we're even prouder of the people, schools, communities, and generations of West Virginians who made those roads worth traveling.

Before modern systems and technology, this is what getting miners in and out of the mine looked like.

This historic hoist mechanism from a West Virginia mine served as the link between the surface and the work happening deep underground. Surrounded by the buildings that supported daily operations, it was responsible for moving crews through the shaft, shift after shift.

It may look simple by today’s standards, but there was nothing small about its role. The equipment has changed over time, but the purpose hasn’t!

The mine doesn't run on its own, and the work doesn't stop when the last hoist has run.

It’s powered by a crew that’s already been there, already getting things ready, already making sure everything is where it needs to be before the shift even hits its stride. The maintenance team keeps equipment running strong. Dispatch is coordinating every move and keeping communication tight. Hoist operators move crews safely and efficiently. The outby team handles the flow, the setup, and everything in between that keeps the operation moving.

These are the people who know the layout like the back of their hand. They know the timing, the pressure, and what it takes to keep things running without missing a beat.

Our mine couldn't run without them! 🙌

One of our own brought home the award for 30 years without a lost-time accident in the mining industry! Mike Campbell has been a proud part of United Coal Company for many years, and his hard work speaks for itself. Day in and day out, Mike shows up for the mine, his crew, and the community around him.

We’re proud to call Mike part of Coal Country and grateful to have men like him representing what this industry is all about. Thank you to the JAH Safety Association for recognizing the commitment and hard work Mike brings every single day. It’s an honor well earned. 🖤
