Where did the term 'horsepower' come from?

The term originated from James Watt as a marketing tool! He created the world's first modern steam engine and developed the means of measuring it's power.

He calculated how much power a single horse working in a mill could produce over a period of time, a figure that he dubbed “horsepower.” Using this unit of measurement, he then came up with a figure that indicated how many horses just one of his engines could replace. The sales ploy worked—we’re still using the term “horsepower” today—and his engines soon became the industry standard, leading directly to the invention of the first steam locomotive in 1804. Queen City is currently working on a rehabilitation project in Crab Orchard, TN with an estimated completion date of Dec '23.

A little history:

Prior to becoming a station stop in 1898, Crab Orchard was discovered to hold large sandstone deposits only found in the mountains of east Tennessee. The commodity became nationally beneficial in material for architecture by the 1920s. (historical info courtesy of trains.com)
