This one was a massive transformation by the crew at Hawleys Home Restoration.
We took this old dirt floor stone basement from roughly 5 feet of headroom down to 7.5 feet, completely changing the functionality and future of this home. What was once a dark, cramped, failing basement is now becoming a safe, dry, structurally sound space with real usable square footage.
On this project we: • Excavated the basement deeper for increased height and functionality
• Rebuilt a collapsing stone wall
• Repointed all existing stonework
• Installed underpinning and reinforced knee walls
• Installed a full waterproofing system
• Poured new concrete floors
• Installed new support posts and footings
• Added a Bilco entry door for safer and easier access

Another one brought back from the brink 💪

Some of my nights are spent crawling through these old foundations. like a giant mystery I find the adventure of solving these mysteries fascinating. every foundation tells a stroy especially the old stone ones. This is the foundation of the original union county/ Northumberland county court house from 1816 these walls have been standing for over 200 years originally I thought the wall was bowing in due to hydrostatic pressure,but apon further research and investigation i belive this wall was built like this to combat the pressure. The wall is 65lf long so building this half moon curv wall prevents the wall from failing. I think only a mason can truly appreciate the absolute mastery it took to undertake this type of project and here we are 200 years later and his work is still standing. The home owners have owned this house since 2007 and the wall hasnt moved since they owned it.

This is what i found out about why this wall was built the way it was
Why they built it curved like that (1816 construction)
Back then they didn’t have rebar or modern concrete, so masons relied on geometry:
🔹 1) Resisting earth pressure
That basement wall is holding back soil.
A straight vertical wall wants to bow inward over time.
By building it with a slight curve or inward batter, they:
Pre-loaded the wall in compression
Spread the soil pressure across the entire length
Reduced the chance of collapse
🔹 2) Arch effect over long spans
Over 65 ft, a straight masonry wall would be weak.
A continuous curve lets the wall act like a horizontal arch
The load is transferred toward the ends instead of bulging in one spot
🔹 3) Settlement tolerance
Old stone foundations move.
A curved wall can absorb movement way better than a straight one without cracking apart
What this tells you (important for your line of work)
This wasn’t a mistake — it was high-level craftsmanship for its time
It was likely built by someone who understood load paths really well
The fact it’s still standing 200+ years later proves it’s doing its job
