Answering one of the most common questions we get — what kind of paint do you use on a fiberglass deck?

It's not paint. It's gel coat. Pigmented resin that bonds directly to the fiberglass surface. We broke down what it is, how it works, where to get it, and how many coats you need in this video.

Should you waterproof your exterior stairs?

Depends on what's underneath them.

This new construction home had usable space below the stair structure so the builder made the call early — full polyurea application on every tread, every riser, every transition.

The whole thing sealed before the project was finished.
Now that space underneath is protected, dry, and actually functional.

That's the difference.

We haven't done a full breakdown of the fiberglass installation process in a while so we figured it was time. This one covers everything — substrate, prep, sanding, rounding edges, filling voids, detail work on the edges and transitions, field lamination, cure, sanding again, acetone, cutting in, and final gel coat.

Every step in order, nothing skipped. Including some details that don't get talked about much — like why more resin isn't always better, why we hold the field gel coat on active construction sites, and how we handle the reinforcement at wall and post transitions.

If you've ever wondered what actually goes into a fiberglass deck from the ground up, this is that video.

We got a question on one of our recent videos asking how we seal the sliding door threshold on a fiberglass deck. Good question — made a video about it.

The most common approach is fiberglass running up to the door and stopping right at the threshold. Wood sill sitting exposed at that transition. That's where water eventually finds its way in.

What we do is run the fiberglass through the entire pan — under the door, across the full threshold, into the base of the door frame on both sides. Plus a lip detail on the back side so any water that gets under the door comes back out onto the deck. It can't sit in there and it can't get behind the system.

The threshold becomes part of the fiberglass system. Not just where it stops.

One property. Three fiberglass decks. Three completely different scenarios.

The first is a roof deck re-glass — living space underneath, has to stay dry, system gets reset.

The second is also a re-glass but there's a new addition being built onto the house that shares this deck. So the re-glass and the new transition points where the addition meets the existing structure all get tied in together.

The third is a brand new install on the addition's deck — new framing, new substrate, new fiberglass system built from scratch.

Same product. Three different reasons for being there.

Most people think about wood or composite when they're adding a deck. But when you've got usable space directly below it, those systems don't work. The gaps between the boards let water through — that's just how they're built.

This homeowner had a full outdoor kitchen and seating area underneath their second floor deck. They wanted that space dry year round. So fiberglass was the call — one continuous surface, no seams, nothing gets through.

Substrate down, edges and wall tie-ins done first, fiberglass across the full field, gel coat to finish. The space below stays completely dry.

That's the difference between board decking and a monolithic surface.
