Last week, FSC’s Jerry Bachar was accompanied by members of the Des Moines Fire Department during a site visit of the DSM’s new Phase 1A/1BW terminal. During this visit, Jerry gave members of their department a behind-the-scenes walkthrough of the building’s fire protection systems FSC designed.

This led to a great conversation about fire department tactical response, engagement protocols with airport security during a fire emergency, and how building evacuations could be handled. These items were each addressed early in design through close coordination with Fire Marshall Jeremy Eekhoff.

As the new terminal’s completion is finally on the horizon, FSC is honored to have been a part of this challenging project on such a strong team, with HNTB and BNIM leading the design, and WTJV leading construction.

Throughout this project, the team has forged a great working relationship with the Des Moines Fire Department. We’ve appreciated the professionalism they’ve shown every step of the way.

CFOO Linda Ungashick embodies all of these qualities, and we were honored to celebrate with her yesterday at the Kansas City Business Journal CFO of the Year Awards, where she was recognized as one of the recipients.

Linda’s contributions as CFOO have gone well above strengthening our financial processes. She has driven firm-wide improvements that have made our firm more organized and efficient. As construction at Barney Allis Plaza continues, so does our work. FSC’s involvement on this new urban park is truly a group effort, involving electrical and plumbing engineering, fire protection engineering, code consulting, and fire and smoke modeling—all provided in-house by our talented, efficient team.

Our scope includes the new outdoor plaza and pavilion, the underground parking garage, and even electrical design to power the new art installation by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. FSC is proud to play a part in bringing this transformative project to Downtown KC with HOK as Lead Architect.

Another exciting FSC project is well on its way to becoming a reality! 🌟 📢 On a team with SixTwentyOne, FSC has been providing MEP engineering, fire protection engineering, code consulting, and accessibility consulting for a new apartment community for people with developmental disabilities.

This is the first ever ground-up development for Friends of JCDS (Johnson County Developmental Supports), featuring 17 affordable apartments, office space, and ground-floor retail for their Emerging Artists Program.

Projects like these dedicated to worthy causes in our own community are especially meaningful to us. FSC is proud to be a part of this project and the team making it happen!

The new Jazz District Parking Garage is officially open—just in time to welcome KC visitors during the FIFA World Cup! This is one of several improvements for “Revive the Vine”, a reinvestment initiative to revitalize and restore the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District.

This building brings much-needed parking spaces to the neighborhood while doubling as an art piece, with 470 new spots across four levels and 150,000 square feet. FSC provided the MEP and fire protection engineering design for this important project on a team with DRAW Architecture.

We're pleased to share that Fire Protection Specialist Chuck Thacker has been appointed to the NFPA Technical Committee on Aviation Facilities (AIS-AAA), where he will be representing FSC. This prestigious committee is responsible for guiding the development of NFPA 409, 415, and 423, which outline requirements for protecting life and property within aircraft hangars, terminals, and engine test facilities.

Chuck brings a robust combination of credentials to this role: decades of experience as a Fire Marshal and Fire Chief, certification as a Certified Building Official, and deep expertise in fire protection engineering, fire risk analysis, and building compliance.

Having worked within the fire service and on the code enforcement side of fire protection, he has a first-hand understanding of how standards shape real-world outcomes. It is through his work at FSC on many aviation projects that this breadth of experience was recognized by NFPA on a national level.

Chuck’s participation in this committee will shape standards that govern some of the most complex and high-stakes facilities in fire protection. His involvement speaks to his dedication to fire protection, safety standards, and ultimately, protecting people and property.

Last Friday, members of FSC’s office took time out of their afternoons to volunteer with Hillcrest Transitional Living, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families facing homelessness and housing insecurity. We were tasked with weeding, mulching, and seeding two buildings at their Overland Park campus. Despite the looming clouds, we managed to finish up just before the downpour hit! 🌧️ 🌧️
