What does 4 parts per trillion really mean?

It’s hard to imagine — but it’s the scale we deal with when testing for PFAS, the persistent “forever chemicals” that are showing up in water systems across the country.

To put it in perspective:
💧 4 drops of water in an Olympic-sized swimming pool
🌱 4 blades of grass in a field the size of Rhode Island
🏖️ 4 grains of sand on a 10-mile beach
⏳ 4 seconds spread across 3,800 years

Even though it sounds like “nothing,” these trace levels of PFAS may still carry health risks over time. Detecting them requires incredibly sensitive equipment and lab conditions that eliminate even the smallest interference.

While IAS Labs doesn’t currently perform PFAS testing in-house, we stay up to date with the science and regulations — and we’re here to help you understand your results, your options, and what to do next.
