The History of Dunbar School in Lexington, NC โจ๐
Before it was known as Dunbar, the school originally operated as the Lexington Colored Graded School, serving African American students during segregation. It was later renamed Dunbar School, in honor of renowned poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, as many Black schools across the country were named after prominent African American leaders and scholars.
For generations, Dunbar was more than a school โ it was the heart of the Black community in Lexington. It provided education, structure, pride, and opportunity during a time when resources were limited but determination was strong. Dedicated teachers and principals worked tirelessly to ensure students received quality instruction and encouragement to succeed.
Through segregation, transition, and change, Dunbar helped shape leaders, business owners, educators, and families who continue to impact Davidson County today.
Dunbarโs legacy is one of resilience, excellence, and community strength. ๐
If you attended Dunbar or had family who did, share your memories below. Letโs keep this history alive.
