With the cost of HVAC equipment, parts, and materials continuing to rise, more homeowners are asking the same question: does my system really need to be replaced, or is there a way to help it last longer? At B Cool, that is exactly the kind of question our Energy Audit is built to answer.

**Before you replace it, let’s see why it’s struggling.**
In many homes, the issue is not simply the age of the equipment. A system may still have life left in it, but problems like poor airflow, duct leakage, sizing concerns, indoor air quality issues, electrical problems, drainage problems, or neglected maintenance can cause it to work harder than it should. That often shows up as high power bills, weak airflow, hot and cold rooms, dust, humidity issues, stale air, or a system that runs but still does not keep the house comfortable.

During our Energy Audit, B Cool looks at each unit individually and grades each system based on how it is operating. We inspect the parts of the system that most directly affect comfort, efficiency, and equipment life, including airflow, filtration, blower performance, coil condition, drain setup, electrical components, refrigerant performance, duct condition, and overall operation. We also use the audit to introduce homeowners to bigger-picture items like indoor air quality and load calculation concerns, because sometimes the equipment is not failing — it is simply operating under the wrong conditions.

After the audit, we explain what we found and make recommendations on what needs to be repaired, corrected, cleaned, adjusted, or improved to help the system operate longer and better. Some homes may need minor repairs or maintenance items. Others may need airflow corrections, duct improvements, filtration upgrades, drainage fixes, or deeper system repairs. Today we had a good training scenario with a customer’s hvac. The unit was really throwing curveballs that had us scratching our heads for a sec.

The unit was a newer 4yr old system attached to a brand new slab home. The unit never worked right and the original installation company wasn’t answering the phone so we couldn’t get any info about the original start up. After a few tests and a couple of additional tools we came to the conclusion that our metering device was failing in unusual ways. Typically out this way, they tend to fail closed and that is a pretty quick and easy trouble.

This metering device would operate correctly for roughly 10-15mins then slam down and partially close. This would lead to the suction line getting 80ish psi when it should be closer to 135-140psi (it was very hot upstairs).

A few hours later, we had a warranty evaporator coil installed, the metering device replaced, the filter dryer swapped and a few other parts replaced to make sure she had a great running unit.

Scenarios like this are the reasons we train as hard as we do. We don’t want to waste our time or the customers time guessing on what could be wrong. We want to diagnose the real issue to get the unit operating as fast as possible.

On the left is the high voltage connection found on most Carrier air handlers. It’s usually terminated using a big blue wire nut and is prone to loosen over time. On the right, we have all 4 connections cut back and cleaned up to prevent possible hot spots or arcs.
Part of the Cool Club checks include us physically looking at these connections and numerous other electrical connections around the unit.
Just as I was trained from the US Military, we take maintenance seriously and believe it’s proven abilities to prolong the life of your equipment.

Emergency installs always seem to go differently. Most of the job seems to be going by the seat of your pants and you have to lean heavily on your training to muscle through.
After it’s all done, we have a system that is running flawlessly and a happy customer who needs a blanket!

Maintenance is a lot more than just cleaning an outside unit or checking a drain. A good well thought out maintenance looks at the hvac system as a whole to give the user the best understanding of how it’s performing and what can be done to improve, if anything.
B Cool’s maintenance plan has come a long way and seen many different forms. Our latest iteration has us checking 8 pages of components to ensure that we miss nothing and relay that information to the customer. This has been a work in progress that we’re very proud to bring to our customers.

We’ve officially hired a new Dispatcher & Office Manager to join the B Cool team. We're excited to have Mr. Brockwell come aboard!
