SPS is proud to be performing critical concrete repair work inside the Storrow Drive Eastbound Tunnel. This project includes overhead concrete removal, surface preparation, and concrete putback in a challenging tunnel environment with limited access, tight work windows, and strict safety requirements.

Our crews are working nights to minimize impacts to the traveling public while coordinating closely with project stakeholders to safely complete the work ahead of major upcoming events in the city. A great team effort by everyone involved to keep this important infrastructure moving forward.

Deep foundations are behind us, summer is here, and the first substructure concrete is officially underway.

Crews recently completed the first footing and columns for the new I-495 Southbound Bridge Pier, marking the transition from deep foundations below grade, to the structure that will soon rise above it.

A big Thank You to the hardworking SPS – D.W. White Construction JV crews, Regis Steel, and the always reliable Benevento Companies and Independent Concrete Pumping Corp.. Their teamwork and craftsmanship made this milestone possible as the project continues to rise out of the ground.

These photos show the work progression of the first placement for the new bridge as the project team transitions out of deep foundations.

#1: Deep foundation installation is complete, and crews begin preparing the pile cap for construction.

#2: Pile cap reinforcing steel and mass concrete thermal control cooling tubes are installed in advance of concrete placement.

#3: Crews placed approximately 200 cubic yards of high-performance concrete for the first footing supporting the new southbound bridge.

#4: Steel column forms are erected around the reinforcing steel in preparation for the next phase of work, column construction.

#5 & #6: Concrete is supplied by Benevento and placed by Independent Concrete Pumping as crews complete the bridge column pours.

#7: The completed footing and columns are backfilled and ready for construction of the pier cap, the next major substructure element.

Last year, SPS Maintenance worked through a weekend shutdown on the Basiliere Bridge over the Merrimack River. Route 125 was fully shut down for the weekend while the crew installed six beams around the existing barrier so the roadway could be reopened to full service. The beams were hung on top of shoring towers to support the span of rail trail.
True to spirit, the Maintenance crew completed the work and reopened the road 24 hours ahead of schedule.

- SPS New England, Inc. has been performing nightwork on the Tobin Bridge as part of a Joint Venture with Liberty Maintenance, Inc. As part of the Tobin Bridge Rehabilitation Project, SPS is completing eight concrete placements along the bridge using ultra-high-performance concrete.

Work on the Tobin Bridge is on-going end expected to continue 2026 and 2027.

SPS New England, Inc. recently completed a bridge deck repair operation at the Elm Street Bridge in Braintree, Massachusetts, over the Red Line and Commuter Rail tracks as part of a larger preservation contract.

Over the course of three shifts, crews chipped out the deteriorated concrete and asphalt to expose the reinforcing steel before successfully placing 18 cubic yards of concrete to restore the bridge deck.

SPS-Walsh JV crews worked overnight placing the concrete bridge deck for the new I‑90 mainline bridges as part of the Newton‑Weston Bridge Bundle project.

This placement is one of many required to complete the current phase of construction and represents a highly coordinated effort by a skilled and experienced team.
