Some contractors use silicone (sometimes caulk) as the PRIMARY waterproof barrier. Newsflash: it's going to fail. When that barrier fails, water gets behind the walls and causes problems.

What you need are the right backer boards. Boards that aren't paper-faced, like board or purple board. From there, the seams need to be sealed, and corners should be sealed with flexible materials (grout won't cut it).

A contractor should never skip out on or do waterproofing halfway. Don't give water a way into your walls.

Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to see through your shower walls to see what's happening behind them when we create your quote. (But how cool would that be?)

What we DO have the ability to do is to make sure that your quote doesn't change no matter what we find behind those shower walls... and we think THAT is pretty cool. 😎
