In episode 2 of Harvard Graduate School of Education's , Assistant Professor Phil Capin led a discussion with Professor Nadine Gaab, Ph.D. and Timothy Odegard about how to support students with dyslexia.

Some key takeaways:
1️⃣ Dyslexia is a neurobiological learning disability. It doesn't mean that a student isn’t smart or capable.
2️⃣ Although early screening systems and attention to risk factors can prevent years of frustration, it's never too late to intervene.
3️⃣ Students with dyslexia need instruction that includes explicit, systematic teaching of how sounds map onto letters and spelling patterns, in addition to lots of practice in reading and spelling words in connected text.

Reading scores are the lowest they’ve been in 40 years, and part of the reason is that fluency has been pushed to the sidelines.

These two simple practices can improve fluency, word recognition, and comprehension:

Repeated reading — Students re-read texts like poetry, song lyrics, and speeches.
Assisted reading — Students read a text while hearing a fluent model read along at the same time. The model can be a prerecorded version on a tablet or the reading of an adult in the classroom.
