Most HVAC professionals learn thumb rules early.

But the best engineers know one thing:

𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐛 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

They help estimate quickly.
They help in early-stage planning.
They help validate whether a number is directionally right.

But relying only on thumb rules for final HVAC design is where many projects go wrong.

Why?

Because real-world performance depends on far more than simplified formulas:

• Occupancy patterns
• Equipment heat loads
• Fresh air requirements
• Building orientation
• Glass/façade exposure
• Process or application-specific conditions

Thumb rules can guide:

📍 Preliminary heat load estimation
📍 CFM approximation
📍 Pump and fan sizing checks
📍 Early equipment budgeting

But they should never replace:

✔ Psychrometric analysis
✔ Hydraulic balancing
✔ Application-specific engineering

🔥 Design Rule #10 – Pipe Sizing Using Pipe Schedule Method
