Rio Tinto Kennecott

Rio Tinto Kennecott Producing premier American copper and other critical minerals in the heart of Utah. 🇺🇸 As such, we take our responsibility to be a strong community partner.

Our mine has been a fixture in the Salt Lake Valley for more than 122 years. You may be surprised to know that we are the largest private economic driver in Utah. No other private sector operation has generated more production, exports, income and employment than Kennecott.

Mining is a unique and interesting industry, and here in Utah we have the opportunity to mine for copper. The metals we mine here are used all over the United States and even in household items like your phone, the one you are probably holding in your hand right now.

Stay tuned for a deep dive into the next step, the concentrator.

A moment worth celebrating and carrying forward.

Earlier this month, Danny, Senior Health Advisor at Rio Tinto Kennecott, was recognized at a Real Salt Lake match in front of nearly 20,000 fans.

This spotlight was made possible through our partnership with .

Through his leadership of the Peer Supporter network—helping connect employees to support when they need it most—Danny champions mental health awareness and access to care.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, his impact is a powerful reminder that caring for our people is a priority year-round.

We want to be part of the solution. ☁️

For 14 years, we’ve proudly partnered with to help improve Utah’s air quality. On May 30, we invite you to join us for the annual UCAIR Gas Can Exchange.

At Kennecott, we’re taking real steps to reduce emissions. In 2019, we closed our coal-fired power plant, cutting our carbon footprint by 65% and eliminating more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.

We’ve also invested in solar energy, building two solar plants and bringing our total capacity to 30 MW. Together, these projects reduce emissions by about 20,000 tonnes annually, the equivalent of removing roughly 4,400 gas-powered cars from the road.

But we don’t just want to stop here. We want to make an impact in our community as well.

Event details:
📅May 30 | 8 a.m. - noon (or until supplies last)
📍Davis Technical College | Kaysville, UT
⛽Bring your old, empty gas cans and exchange them for a free, EPA-compliant SureCan (while supplies last).

Did you know? Our smelter captures 99.9%+ of sulfur from process gases before release using a high-efficiency acid plant. We also convert waste heat into on-site electricity.

And that plume from the stack? It’s mostly condensed water v***r (“steam”) from treated exhaust. Plus, our smelter is one of only two operating copper smelters in the U.S., and we’re always working to make our operations smarter and more efficient. 🇺🇸

Ever wondered what’s inside the rail cars moving through our site?

They’re carrying either heavy copper sheets or sulphuric acid, a by product of copper smelting. When copper concentrate is smelted, sulphur is captured instead of released, then processed into sulphuric acid. This helps reduce emissions while creating a useful product.

Sulphuric acid plays an important role far beyond mining. In agriculture, it is used to produce fertilizers that help replenish nutrients in the soil and support healthy crop growth. It is also essential for battery manufacturing and metal processing.

Because safety is our top priority, we use a dedicated rail and train system designed specifically to transport sulphuric acid safely and efficiently. So next time you see a train moving through the site, you’re seeing an important connection between responsible mining, agriculture, and everyday products people rely on.
