Introducing the VPodDuo: a portable device from the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, about the size of an AirPod case, that can detect genetic material from Zika, HIV, staph, and cancer markers. Did you know that the same tech gripping a World Cup ball is helping heal colons?

Well, neither did we.

Illinois engineering professor and Beckman researcher Bill King developed microstructure technology inspired by how insects grip surfaces. Now it’s being used inside adidas’s Predator cleats, and inside medical devices helping patients heal after colon surgery.
