Why Does Material Matter When Choosing a Mixer?

Because thick, sticky, and heavily filled materials require different mixing action.

The material's viscosity and behavior can determine whether the process needs more kneading, folding, turnover, or specialized discharge.

That's why mixer selection should start with the material and process—not the equipment.

Oddly satisfying? Absolutely. 😌

Watching a Double Arm Mixer come back to life is somehow more relaxing than it has any right to be. Who knew industrial equipment could have a glow-up?

Instead of replacing a machine that's built to last, give it the rebuild it deserves. Our rebuild program restores performance, extends equipment life, and helps you get more from the investment you already made.

Your mixer called... it's tired of being "good enough." 😉

We’re hiring a Process Equipment Design Engineer in Waukesha, WI.

Orbis Machinery is looking for a hands-on mechanical design engineer who enjoys solving real-world equipment challenges and seeing their work come to life on the shop floor.

This role supports the design, development, testing, troubleshooting, and improvement of custom industrial process equipment, including mixers, mills, blenders, dryers, and related mechanical systems.

Experience with custom OEM equipment, rotating equipment, power transmission systems, fabricated machinery, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or hands-on manufacturing environments is a plus.

Interested candidates can email their resume to Alesia Motta at [email protected].

Unexpected downtime is one of the most expensive problems in manufacturing.

Not because the machine stops.

Because production stops.

Traditional drive systems often require additional maintenance, adjustments, and service that can impact uptime and productivity.

That's why this operation switched to a Direct Drive Ball Mill.

With fewer mechanical components and a simplified drive design, maintenance became easier, downtime was reduced, and reliability improved.

Less time spent on repairs.

More time focused on production.

Some materials simply demand more from the mixing process.

Higher viscosity.

Greater resistance.

Tighter consistency requirements.

That’s where Sigma Mixers are built to perform.

Designed for demanding industrial applications, Sigma Mixers provide the mixing action needed for materials that conventional mixing systems often struggle to process efficiently.

Because when the material becomes more challenging, the equipment becomes even more important.

More power alone doesn’t solve a mixing problem.

The entire drive system has to work together.

For this 350 gallon sigma mixer upgrade, Orbis Machinery replaced the existing drive with:

⚙️ 150 horsepower motor
⚙️ 6:1 ratio gearbox
⚙️ Variable frequency drive controls
⚙️ Custom fabricated transition plates

The upgraded system gives the customer adjustable blade speed control while improving mixing performance for a demanding high-viscosity application.

After fabrication, the machine was fully wired, tested, and prepared for shipment.

Because in heavy-duty mixing applications, consistency starts with the right combination of torque, speed, and control.

Bad mix consistency usually isn’t random.

In many high-viscosity applications, the real issue is that the mixer simply isn’t generating enough blade speed or shear to process the material effectively.

That’s exactly what this customer was experiencing.

The blades were mixing too slowly, and the product wasn’t reaching the consistency they needed.

So Orbis Machinery upgraded this 350 gallon sigma mixer with:

• 150 horsepower replacement drive
• 6:1 ratio gearbox

• Variable frequency drive control cabinet
• Adjustable blade speed control
• Custom fabricated transition plates

The entire system was then wired, tested, and prepared for shipment.

Because in demanding mixing applications, consistency starts with the right drive system.

Process development depends on more than mixing power.

Control matters too.

The DKL-4 laboratory mixer is designed to give operators direct control over key mixing parameters during testing and formulation development.

This configuration includes:

• Integrated emergency stop system
• Direction selection controls
• Variable speed adjustment
• Real-time RPM monitoring
• Live amperage feedback during operation

Because understanding how the material responds during mixing is just as important as the final blend itself.

The more visibility teams have into the process, the more confidently they can evaluate formulations before scaling production.
