September is the last easy month.

Masonry has a season in New England and it closes with the first hard frost. Mortar needs the air and the ground above freezing to cure properly, and nobody digs or compacts a base out of frozen ground.

So the crack you have walked past all summer is not a spring job. It is a September job that spends the winter getting worse if it waits.

Steps are the first thing a house says.

Every visitor, every delivery, every buyer walking up for the first time. Nobody comments on good steps and everybody notices bad ones.

Most get patched. A patched step is a step that will be patched again, because the problem is almost never the tread — it is the base under it that moved.

Mortar fails long before brick does.

That is by design. Mortar is meant to be softer than the brick around it, so that when a wall moves — and every wall moves — the joint gives instead of the brick cracking. It is the part built to be replaced.

Repointing is cutting out the tired joint and packing in new mortar. Done at the right time it is maintenance. Left too long, water gets behind the face and it stops being a joint problem.

If you can rake a joint out with a key, it is time.

Asphalt cracks and you patch the whole section, and the patch never matches. A paver comes up with a hand tool and the replacement drops into the same hole.

Bluestone is flat and cool, which is why it reads so well underfoot. Granite is dense and heavy, so it goes where people step and where water sits. Fieldstone is rounded and warm, and it belongs on a face you want to look old.

Picking the wrong one is not a taste problem, it is a durability problem.
