What exactly is a geogrid and why is it used in civil construction?

Geogrids reinforce soil and aggregate by improving load distribution and reducing lateral movement, helping create stronger, more durable pavements while reducing the amount of aggregate required.

In this short video, Geofabrics CEO and Managing Director Dennis Grech explains how geogrids work and why they're widely used in infrastructure projects.

An access track in Ningi, Queensland continues to perform well one year after construction, with no signs of rutting despite regular traffic from a 6,000-litre commercial dual-axle truck.

To achieve the required performance with minimal pavement thickness, Geofabrics proposed a solution combining the Geoweb cellular confinement geocell with MIRAFI H2Rx multifunctional woven geotextile. Together, the system provided pavement stability, reinforcement, and moisture management, enabling a more durable design.

🦘 Did you know Megaflo Green drain pipe is manufactured locally in our Albury facility?

Engineered for Australian ground conditions, Megaflo Green delivers superior sub-surface drainage across civil infrastructure projects including roads, retaining walls, landscaped areas, and sports field applications, supporting effective water management where it matters most.

With up to 4.9x faster water drainage than 100 millimetre round agi pipe, Megaflo Green removes water more efficiently in demanding site conditions. Made using recycled materials and verified by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), it supports sustainable infrastructure outcomes.

⛳️🏌️ Designed to host PGA Championships, requiring professional-level standards for both playability and durability, Sandhurst Golf Course needed some performance enhancements.

During winter, the silty clay soils became saturated, making the course unplayable. In summer, the soils dried out, causing shrinkage cracks and leaving the surface rock hard.

Managing these extreme seasonal conditions was critical to delivering a course suitable for championship play. Megaflo Green was installed sub-surface to improve drainage and playability of the course.

🔬 Meet Gustavo Meneses.

As a Civil Design Engineer in our GRID (Geosynthetic Research, Innovation & Development) team, Gustavo supports civil infrastructure projects by applying hydraulic and civil design expertise, CAD modelling, and geosynthetic knowledge. He works with designers, contractors, and internal teams to translate project requirements into practical, buildable solutions across a range of civil and hydraulic applications.

“The work I do in the GRID bridges the gap between design intent and practical site outcomes. I enjoy turning challenges into clear buildable solutions for teams from design to site."

The GRID plays a key role in supporting project outcomes through technical design input, testing, material knowledge, and practical engineering insight, helping ensure the right geosynthetic solution is adopted.
