To continue celebrating the women in our community, we’ll next be highlighting the incredible women from the Queensland Energy Resources team.

Meet Mel ✨
"I’m the Lab Manager at Queensland Energy Resources, author of Quiet Achievers – How to be seen and heard so you stand out, and founder of Integrated Soul. I love creating meaningful impact, whether it’s energy developments or unlocking human potential."

"One of my proudest achievements was having the courage to outgrow versions of myself that no longer fit. Leaving what was expected of me and choosing alignment over approval taught me that growth is uncomfortable and worth it."

"I’ve been supported by both women and men throughout my career and business. The most influential are those who expand what feels possible, remain solutions-focused and lead with conviction. They’ve shown me that sustainable success is built on strong relationships, direct conversations, and unwavering integrity."

"In both industry and business, I challenge others to stay curious, expand their thinking, take ownership, and build a life that truly fits them."

Continuing our celebration of the amazing women in our community, we’re shining a spotlight on Sam✨

"I’m Sam, and I am the Senior Laboratory Technician at Queensland Energy Resources. I love laboratory work because it’s hands-on, detail-driven, and plays an important role in supporting safe, reliable operations and outcomes for the business and the broader community."

"A moment I’m proud of is finally stepping out of my comfort zone and making a career change that has given me a lot of growth personally and professionally."

"I’ve faced the challenge of balancing a hectic home life with three young children alongside work, sport, and school commitments. It’s taught me the importance of organisation, flexibility, and staying calm under pressure—both at work and at home."

"The women around me inspire me with their work ethic and resilience; they remind me that confidence grows through competence and support. I support other women by encouraging them, sharing knowledge, and helping create a positive, collaborative work environment."

"To my younger self: back your abilities and take that leap! To the next generation: stay curious and don’t be afraid to pursue technical and scientific careers."

What laboratory is complete without a trusty centrifuge? Mel and Sam at QER's lab can't do without it and recently acquired a new one. The original centrifuge had been in the lab since 2008. It was one of Mel's favourite bits of gear and whilst she's happy to have a new one, she says it felt like saying good-bye to a faithful friend. Pictured here is the trusty old centrifuge and a picture of the new one being installed. Keep up the great research in the lab Mel and Sam!

Here at QER, we are not shy about mental health and wellbeing. Such conversations are important for all of us to have. Please read our Fuel for Thought Article "Now, THAT's a Conversation Starter" and see one way an Aussie company - TradeMutt- are encouraging workers to have those conversations. QER got onboard with the idea and are wearing their TradeMutt gear proudly.

When I'm out and about in Gladstone, my lovely wife and friends are well aware of my choice of funky, bright and colourful shirts. Those shirts were "somewhat unique" and have copped a few jibes over the years, as well as starting a few conversations.

Ok...I know that's a pretty heavy question for this time of year when most of us are thinking about such important matters as the Melbourne Cup, the looming Christmas break and how quickly the year has disappeared.

As our followers know, safety is a priority at QER. We undertook our usual hazard reduction burn to help prevent dangerous bushfires. Not only is backburning part of our safety plan, but we coordinated with Barry Maluga at Emergency Response, Readiness and Recovery Consultancy (ERRRC) to undertake this task with the utmost safety to the people involved. Read more in our latest Fuel for Thought article on our web site here:

It's that time of year again when we undertake a seasonal hazard reduction burn here at QER's New Fuels Development Centre.

QER was recently invited to the Rotary Club of Gladstone Inc handover night where we received a sponsorship appreciation award for support of the Ladies Long Table Luncheon. This event raised approximately $50k which will go to supporting the local community.

Also, a big congratulations to Abe Zadeh who has taken the reigns as President of the club for the second year in a row. Abe said he wouldn't be able to do it without the support of his wife Elmira Esfahani. All the best to the dynamic duo on the year ahead.

QER believes that people's health and safety is number 1 priority. Mowing can be a hot and dusty task. QER has purchased an enclosed cab mower to reduce exposure to heat and dust for those assigned the task of mowing. As with any new vehicle, the guys were rather thrilled on handover day and eagerly learned the general features, safety and maintenance procedures for the new mower.

The world is a fascinating place. In half the world its summer, but here in Australia its winter. And for Central Queensland, it's a mild one at that. A chill in the air on a recent early evening dog walk got Nigel thinking about how people all over the world cope with winter......
