A manufacturer is leveraging the power of AI to boost safety, efficiency and productivity on the factory floor. A vision AI solution is helping manufacturing managers check that employees are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including caps, wrist straps and masks, properly. The solution is also assisting in managing employee clock-ins and secure area control.

The challenge
IP cameras to capture real-time images and a powerful edge AI system were required to enable whole groups of employees to clock-in, grant permissions for working zones, and ensure that anyone attempting to operate specialised machinery had proper safety attire, with no excessive idle time. Additionally, the system needed to send an alert to managers if it detected any abnormalities among personnel operating crucial equipment.

A water utility in the coastal southern US is using Advantech panel PCs and LTE-enabled gateways to keep the water flowing at its reverse osmosis plant.

The utility needed to modernise its reverse osmosis system, including migrating its software from Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk to Inductive Automation Ignition and using LTE-enabled gateways to send telemetry data through a cellular network.

The project background
The utility uses reverse osmosis to produce water for municipality residents - who use approximately 11 million potable gallons (around 42 million litres) every day.

Reverse osmosis uses pressure to separate dissolved salts and other ions from water. As pressurised water moves through a semi-permeable membrane, it allows water molecules to pass but discards dissolved salt and other ions.

The process is less expensive than buying water from local distributors.

Global sportech VOGO has chosen the Getac F110 tablet to help deliver its range of sports video solutions.

Founded in 2013, VOGO specialises in audio and video solutions dedicated to sport and now also adapted to industry and the audiovisual sector.

In the sports market, VOGO offers sports federations and clubs analysis and decision-making tools (refereeing assistance, medical diagnosis, coaching and performance enhancement).

VOGO had been using another supplier's tablets to deploy these video solutions. But the team was looking for higher-performance alternatives with improved screen visibility, longer battery life and maximum resistance to weather conditions for use on sports grounds, particularly outdoors.

The Getac F110 offers a solution
After carrying out a number of tests, the VOGO technical team opted for F110 Getac tablets. Combining performance, ergonomics and robustness, the Getac F110 proved to be the perfect tool for relaying VOGO's video solutions.

Understanding the differences between industrial PCs and regular PCs is essential in the modern landscape of computing technology. An industrial PC is designed to operate in harsh environments that standard PCs cannot withstand.

Industrial environments often involve extreme temperatures, vibrations, dust and humidity, in sectors like manufacturing, defence, mining and transport.

Unlike regular PCs, industrial PCs are engineered with rugged features, long product life cycles, and often support legacy parts, making them a reliable choice for specialised applications.

Here’s what sets industrial PCs apart.
Durability and ruggedness
The most notable difference lies in their build and durability. Industrial PCs are housed in robust metal casings to protect against physical impacts and environmental challenges. They often meet higher standards of ingress protection, safeguarding against dust and water exposure.

Managing the environmental conditions within a factory is key to preventing printed circuit board (PCB) defects.

Without proper control of humidity and temperature on the manufacturing floor, expensive components and potentially entire assemblies can be compromised, leading to quality issues and additional costs.

The importance of humidity levels
High levels of humidity in a manufacturing environment can lead to serious issues such as slumping, where solder paste absorbs too much water and causes bridging during reflow, and solderballing (or “popcorning”), resulting from excessive water absorption and poor coalescence.

Out-gassing can also occur, where water creeps under surface mounts, especially BGAs, causing pressure build-up that can blow off covers.

Conversely, low humidity can cause flux to evaporate too quickly, drying out solder paste and leading to poor release from stencils and insufficient solder joint defects.

One of the key methods to prevent Printed Circuit Board (PCB) defects is by managing the environmental conditions within the factory. Without proper control

Modern cellular networks are enabling monitoring of remote sites across various industries, including water utilities.

Many industrial operations benefit from remote site information sent to local systems. For example, knowing the temperature in a remote water facility or whether a pump is running at peak performance or a tank is empty can eliminate action needed by on-site personnel, or trigger a workflow notification for necessary maintenance.

Network solutions to acquire data from remote sites include:

- Creating a connection, either wired or wireless, between locations with fibre, copper or specialised wireless solutions.
- "Leasing” a connection using a dedicated leased line from a telco, who likely has some wired infrastructure already in place.
- Creating an IoT solution to publish data from a remote location utilising IoT hardware, such as I/O devices that support almost any number and type of inputs or LTE-enabled gateways to use cellular networks.

Many industrial operations benefit from remote site information sent to local systems. For example, knowing if a remote pump is running at peak performance, if

Jacarta PowerZooks can monitor single phase basic or metered PDUs without incurring downtime for installation. PowerZooks use SNMP (v1 & v3) to integrate with existing network management and smart building systems, such as PRTG by Paessler.
This means PowerZooks can be installed quickly and easily without the need for additional software. It also provides users with the ability to view and analyse power usage data from PowerZooks in conjunction with other sensors and systems.

There are two ways to integrate PowerZooks with a PRTG installation.
With manual set-up, add a device and manually configure the SNMP sensor using the supplied OIDs. This is ideal for users installing less than five PowerZooks or those with specific integration requirements.
OIDLIB set-up uses a PRTG OIDLIB file to allow for the fastest possible integration.
At ESIS Industrial Electronics, we offer a range of solutions to meet your industrial user interface needs.
