Some project photos stop you in your tracks. This is one of them.

The scaffold system running the full length of this marine jetty structure — stretching out into vivid turquoise water beneath a clear Queensland sky — is as good a visual argument as any for what this industry delivers.

But the photo is only part of the story.

The scope required scaffold access along the full deck perimeter of the jetty, with working platforms at deck level and below the soffit, pile access at the waterline, and a separate structural working platform at the jetty head where the iconic timber lattice dome sits.

The sequencing of a scope this long is its own engineering problem — materials can only be delivered from the shore end, working zones have to be managed across multiple bays simultaneously, and the install has to progress without compromising the bays already completed behind it.

Well done to the Benchmark team on this one.

This is what it looks like when 3D scaffold design is done properly — and then built to match.

The model shows a full wrap scaffold system around a large cylindrical tank structure: multi-level working platforms following the curved geometry, internal stair access between levels, containment boarding integrated throughout, and a materials hoist position resolved in the design before a single component was ordered.

The photo on the right is that model — built.

This matters for a scope of this scale because:
→ A cylindrical structure has no flat faces — every bay is a chord, not a straight run
→ Platform levels follow the tank geometry, not the other way around
→ Hoist position confirmed against platform access at every level before model is finalised
→ Containment integrated into structural design — not added on afterwards

What you see on the right took months of planning to make look this straightforward.

That's the job.

Temporary works that don't look temporary.

This galvanised stair and landing system was installed to provide public access across a level change on an infrastructure project — and the finish speaks for itself. Non-slip treads, yellow nosing, compliant handrails on both sides, a mid-landing with full guardrail, and a clean galvanised finish that sits comfortably alongside the heritage streetscape behind it.

Temporary access in a heritage or community setting has to work harder than a standard construction stair. This is what that looks like when it's done properly:
→ Fully compliant geometry throughout
→ Non-slip surface treatment on every tread and landing
→ Yellow nosing for visibility and safety
→ Galvanised finish appropriate for the setting
→ Designed to serve the public, not just the construction crew

The scaffold industry builds a lot of stairs. Not all of them look like this.

One crane pick. A lot of planning behind it.

What you're looking at is a U-shaped scaffold module being lifted into position as a single unit — containment mesh on all faces, working platforms inside, the whole assembly suspended mid-air.

The U-configuration tells you something about the scope: this module was designed to wrap around a specific structural element — enclosing it on three sides to create a contained working environment once landed. Everything inside was built and integrated at ground level before the hook went on.

That's the point of ground-build methodology:
→ Complex geometry easier to assemble at ground level
→ Containment sheeting fitted before the lift — not at height
→ Crew can walk through the completed unit before it leaves the ground
→ One lift replaces hours of working-at-height er****on time

By the time this module landed, the crew already knew exactly what they were getting. No surprises at height. That's the goal every time.

Not your everyday access scope.

This is the Townsville Bureau of Meteorology radar station — and the scaffold at the top was engineered to give our crew safe working access to the tower structure and radar assembly during construction and fitout works.

The access challenges here are specific and layered. The tower shaft is circular and tapers as it rises, expanding outward at the top where the primary working elevation sits — changing the footprint and cantilever requirements at the exact point where the crew needed to be.

A crane was required for component access throughout the build, and the scaffold was designed around that from the outset — not retrofitted to accommodate it. The platform at the top of the tower was engineered to follow the geometry of the structure at that elevation, providing a complete working deck for the fitout crew with stair access from below and the crane pick point integrated into the scaffold design.

Spot the scaffold.

It's there — mid-height on the face of this curved high-rise tower, sitting neatly against the façade without disrupting the building's appearance or the residents inside it.

Access on an occupied residential tower is a different brief to a construction site. The building is live. Guests and residents are using the spaces adjacent to where the crew is working. The scaffold has to be installed, used and dismantled with minimal impact — on the building's operations, the people inside it, and the appearance of the structure from the street.

The cantilevered platform visible here allows our crew to access the curved façade at the required elevation without conventional ground support — suspended from the building itself, following the curved geometry of the floor plates bay by bay.

From the street, you'd barely know it was there. From the platform, the crew has everything they need to do their job safely and efficiently.

Not many scaffold jobs come with a view like this.

This access system was installed at the top of one of the Gold Coast's most recognisable high-rise structures — positioned around the building's external structural elements at upper levels, with the coastline, beach and city stretching out below.

The geometry here is anything but standard. Large-diameter tubular structural members cross at multiple angles, leaving no conventional flat surfaces to work from and no predictable tie locations. Every bay of the scaffold had to be configured around the specific geometry of the structure at that elevation — and at this height, wind loading is a primary design consideration, not a secondary one.

The view is something the crew gets to appreciate. The engineering behind what they're standing on is what makes it possible.

Ground-build and crane-lift. Still one of the most underutilised methodologies in the access industry — and one of the most effective.

The stair tower visible in this lift was built at ground level — every landing, every flight, every connection made and inspected before the hook went on. It was then lifted as a single complete unit and positioned against the shaft structure in one pick.

The numbers on a lift like this matter:
→ Built at ground, inspected at ground, certified at ground
→ One crane pick replaces hours of working-at-height er****on time
→ Crew on the ground during the lift is a fraction of a conventional build methodology
→ Lift plan, crane selection and rigging are part of the engineered access package

Ground-build isn't always the answer. But when the geometry works and crane capacity is available, it's hard to argue with the outcome.

The orange barriers say it all: traffic is still moving below while our crew works above.

This suspended scaffold system was installed on the underside of a bridge deck to allow structural maintenance works to proceed — with the carriageway remaining open to traffic throughout.

The challenges here are specific and layered:
→ Suspension system must carry full working load without overloading the deck structure
→ Platform must access all areas of the soffit, including around the deck beams above
→ Crew egress must be fully resolved before works commence — no improvising over live traffic
→ System must remain stable under vehicle-induced vibration throughout the program

The crew member in the foreground captures the scale — and the composure that comes with doing this work properly.
