How does steel get its strength and formability?

It comes down to microstructure. By controlling alloy chemistry, rolling temperature, and cooling rate, steelmakers balance phases like ferrite, pearlite, bainite, austenite, and martensite. Each brings its own strength and formability tradeoffs, from ductile ferrite to ultra-strong martensite.

Our newest AHSS Insights article highlights how new alloying and annealing strategies push cold-rolled HSLA steels past 550 MPa yield strength while keeping their weldability and edge formability.

Their high yield-to-tensile strength ratio, low carbon equivalent, good weldability, and limited dependence on work hardening or bake hardening make these grades strong candidates for roll-formed parts, seating, bumper beams and EV battery protection.

Kia's second-generation Seltos moves to the new K3 platform, with greater use of ultra-high-strength and hot-stamped steel for a more rigid body and better occupant protection. Korea-built versions use up to 60% ultra-high-strength and hot-stamped steel.
