Renovating a lodge's interior changes how guests arrive. Expanding its patio changes how they stay.

At Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, our work ran from the arrival and lobby market through the kitchen and out onto an expanded patio facing Lac Beauvert.

The result is more room to slow down where the view is best.

Guests spend more time in their room than anywhere else in a hotel.

At The Kenrick in Banff, that meant taking all 70 suites back to the studs inside a building that first opened in 1982, then fitting new mechanical and electrical systems and custom millwork, like the built-in headboard and banquette nook, within the original frame.

The result is a room built to feel as good on the hundredth stay as the first.

Not quite wash-ready, but we’re getting close!

Outside, crews poured concrete curbs as the truck worked its way around Tommy’s Express Car Wash in St. Thomas. Inside, membrane went on around the window and door frames to keep water out of the walls, which matters in a building made to spray it all day, and trim went up along the walls. In the wash bay, the tunnel arches are standing tall and waiting for their first car.

A month from now, the only dirty things here will be the cars rolling in 🚗🧽

Hospitality never hands a contractor the same room twice.

Seven projects across Alberta and Ontario, from a mountain hotel in Banff and a lodge by the lake in Jasper to a private members’ club, a bar inside a historic hotel and three downtown Toronto dining rooms.

What they share is that everything is decided before the doors open. Schedules planned around a running business, finishes that have to survive a full service, and details that cannot be fixed once guests are in the room.

Every one of them has to work from the first service onward, whatever room it is.

Most contractors can build a clinic. Fewer have built seven, each one for a different kind of practice.

Two in the Toronto area and five across Calgary, and none of them share a floor plan: an emergency hospital that never closes, a hospital built only for cats, and clinics planned around laparoscopic surgery, dental care and lower-stress visits.

That is the part that never repeats. Every practice runs its day differently, and the build has to follow the care, not the other way around.

Veterinary keeps growing for us because the work is genuinely different every time. That is the part we like about it.

Most bar renovations get to close the doors. This one sat inside a hotel that stayed open the whole time.

Cassette in Toronto’s Gladstone House was a complete commercial build-out: a long bar over black-and-white checkered floors, a stage behind red curtains, booths in patterned upholstery, and a record room where custom millwork shelving holds vinyl against the original brick.

That is a harder job than it looks. Every trade and every delivery had to be scheduled around hotel guests, and every new element had to meet existing fabric cleanly, from the brick in the record room to the original columns on the bar floor.

The result is a room that works equally well at two in the afternoon and eleven at night.

Most lodges renovate a room at a time. This project took on the whole arrival.

At Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, that meant reworking the main lodge from the front door in. The lobby and reception, the lobby market, the bar and lounges that look out over the lake and mountains, and an expanded patio outside.

The harder part does not show in the photos. The project also had to fix how people move through the lodge and how it is pressurized, so circulation and air were solved alongside every finish.

Guests now walk into a lodge that puts the view in front of them from the moment they are through the door.

Most clinics feel different the moment you leave the waiting room. This one was built so it doesn't.

At Nova Vet in Calgary, the same palette runs the whole way through. Green velvet and patterned gold panels in the lounge, an arched corridor under yellow pendant lights, and rooms behind black-framed glass doors with frosted panels.

Carrying one look from the front of the clinic to the back is harder than it sounds. The rooms along that corridor still have to work as clinical spaces, with finishes that take cleaning, animals and constant use.

So the visit feels the same from the front door to the last room down the hall.

Steak and sushi usually ask for very different rooms.

At Blue Bovine Steak + Sushi House in Toronto, stone, wood and patterned screens carry from the entrance through the dining room and into the lounge, so both sides of the menu share one setting. The screens are the thread. The same pattern appears at the door, overhead through the dining room, and again as a full-height panel in the lounge.

Detail that exposed has to be set out early and held through every trade, because the lighting sits behind it and nothing can be adjusted later. It holds up in the places nobody photographs too. Swipe to the last frame.

Sit down anywhere and the room makes sense, whichever half of the menu you came for.

Most emergency clinics take the animal through a door and ask the owner to wait. This one was built to keep them together.

Etobicoke runs on an open-concept model, so the build had to support it. Treatment tables on an open floor rather than behind closed doors, seating in the middle of the room, and sightlines that let staff work at speed with people standing right there.

That is a harder plan than it looks. Everything a team needs within reach, clear circulation around every table, and a space that still feels calm for someone having the worst night of their year.

What that adds up to is a place where nobody has to sit in a corridor wondering what is happening.
