⚠️ Big news from Brussels for welders across Europe.

The EU has reached a political agreement on the sixth revision of the Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic substances Directive (CMRD) — and welding fumes are now explicitly in scope.

What it means for the trade:

🔥 Welding fumes formally classified and regulated under the carcinogens framework — no longer an afterthought.
🔥 New occupational exposure limits set for cobalt, PAHs, and 1,4-dioxane — all commonly found in weld fume.
🔥 Employers must provide regular breaks for workers wearing PPE, and clarify when and how PPE is required.
🔥 Stronger emphasis on engineering controls — source capture, fume extraction, and ventilation over relying on respirators alone.

This matters beyond Europe. Multinational fabricators and exporters will feel the ripple effect through supply-chain safety requirements, and it raises the bar for every shop selling into the EU market.
