Before construction began on Braidwood Supportive Housing & Shelter, Elders, Matriarchs, and representatives from the K'ómoks, Pentlatch, Sathloot, and Sasitla First Nations held a Ground Blessing ceremony at the site on Braidwood Road in Courtenay, BC.

Jessie Everson of K'ómoks First Nation, was quoted in the Comox Valley Record: "The people that we have here with us from our community are the ones who are going to be helping connect this work, spreading eagle down, to spread a peace, a blessing amongst this project."

Forty years ago, IWCD started building on Vancouver Island with the mindset that trust is built through ex*****on not words.

Forty years later, that trust is still built the same way: one project at a time, and in many cases, the neighbourhoods people end up spending their lives in.

Royal Bay is one of those neighbourhoods- and PATH Developments' Bella Park project sits right in the middle of it.

Ocean views out one side, forested trails on the other, running and biking routes woven through the area, sandy beaches a short walk away, and schools close enough that morning drop-off doesn't eat into the day. It's about as "Vancouver-Island" as a community gets.

Forty years in, this is still the part of the job we love most: creating places like this for people to come together, and knowing we had a hand in it.

IWCD knows that every good project begins with good communication.

It starts with the client sharing the vision they want to bring to life. Then comes the collaboration between the architect and the project managers, translating that vision into plans. That message starts to multiply- dozens of trades on dozens of schedules, each one needing precise direction on where to be and when.

Like conducting a symphony, every trade is reading from the same sheet, coming in on cue, trusting that the section before them played their part on time. Drywall waits for electrical. Roofing waits for framing. Everyone working in harmony.

Path Developments Bella Park project is almost ready for a standing ovation.
After months of everyone playing their part on schedule, the project has moved into its finishing stage, and completion is closer than ever.

Construction is underway on 22 new Complex Care homes in Nanaimo.

IWCD has begun work on this three-storey development at 1850 Boxwood Rd., with 22 studio units that each include a kitchenette and private bathroom.
The homes are for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness who have complex needs and require additional support to maintain their housing.

Residents will have 24/7 staff support from a non-profit operator, with health services provided by Island Health.
The project is expected to be completed in 2028.

What started as a small family operation in Nanaimo in 1986 has grown into a 140-person team across two offices, with hundreds of projects and decades of partnerships behind us.
This is a thank-you to everyone who's been part of it: the crew that shows up every day, the trade partners who've been with us through hundreds of projects, and the clients who've kept coming back.

A good time for a great cause!

VICA Women in Construction Nanaimo, recently hosted an event to raise money for 'Honour the Work'- a BC Construction Association program that puts STEAMS kits into K-5 classrooms.
Each kit is turnkey, hands-on, and includes a set of diverse children's books, all built around the BC curriculum.
The goal is to reach 500 classrooms and 21,000+ students across the province.

IWCD is excited to announce that we will be beginning construction on Braidwood Supportive Housing & Shelter, in partnership with Pacific Swell Development Inc. and BC Housing.

This two-building community services complex includes a 4-storey supportive housing building (25,142 sqft) with 70 studio units and a 2-storey shelter building (22,914 sqft) with 73 shelter beds and space to add as many as 30 more mats in an amenity space during inclement weather.

The housing building features a commercial kitchen and dining area, meeting rooms, and office spaces. The shelter building includes a flexible multi-purpose area that will be used for meetings and programs

Nothing says thank you like tacos with the whole crew!💙

Last week we hosted a trades appreciation BBQ at Anchor (formerly Esquimalt Terrace for those of you that have been following along!) in Esquimalt, to say a big thank-you to everyone who's been on site.

Anchor is a six-storey, 108,200 sqft wood-frame rental building bringing 135 homes, one, two, and three-bedroom units, plus two live/work commercial spaces to the neighbourhood. After months of framing and finishing, it's now in the home stretch.

Year after year, showing up to this tournament feels like one of the highlights of our calendar.

Since 2018, this tournament has brought the community together at Nanaimo Golf Club to raise over $4 million for youth programs, healthcare, and local initiatives across Vancouver Island.
Created in honour of Tom Harris, the event carries forward the same spirit he was known for: that showing up for your community is just part of being here.

IWCD has been fortunate to be part of this almost every year, and it never gets old. There's something about being on that course with people who genuinely care about this place that sticks with you long after the round ends.
