Westmark is thrilled to announce that our project – Hammond Bay Residences – was awarded the Excellence Award for “Affordable Housing” in the 17th Annual Commercial Building Awards hosted by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). A partnership between Westmark, BC Housing, and Ballenas Housing Society, this 53-unit apartment building provides affordable homes for seniors, small families, and persons with disabilities.

As general contractors, we’re passionate about creating purposeful and meaningful spaces that have a lasting impact on the communities we live in and serve. Masonry is an ancient construction solution used for modern construction problems.

At Songbird, a masonry block wall is currently under construction and will reach a height of five stories upon completion. It will serve as a "firewall" to fulfill enhanced fire safety and building code requirements. This wall functions as a fire break, separating different sections of the building and limiting the speed a fire could spread while maintaining the structural integrity of the building during emergency situations.

Large-scale multi-unit residential projects such as Songbird require a large-scale foundation underground.

Songbird will have approximately 1,000 cubic meters of concrete placed as footings, building a solid foundation for nearly 100 future units in this 5-story building.

Footings are comprised of concrete and rebar. The concrete provides the compressive strength with which the gravity load of the structure is carried down to the soil below. The rebar increases the shear/tensile strength of the concrete to help it resist cracking and breaking.

The interiors are taking shape at "Link" on Cedar Ridge, as gypcrete has begun to be poured into the first 50 suites.

Gypcrete or Gypsum concrete - is commonly used as a floor underlay in wood-frame and concrete construction for fire ratings, sound reduction, radiant heating, and floor leveling.
