Yukon Energy has identified two final proposed sites for the Whitehorse Power Centres Project, a key initiative that is needed to meet winter demand for power, as well as support growth and the integration of more community renewables in the Yukon.

Yukon Energy is proposing to build power centres at both sites:

North: Ta’an Kwäch’än Council (TKC) Deep Creek

South: Copper Haul Road

New transmission lines will also be needed to connect both sites to the Yukon grid. Where practical, these new power lines will follow existing transmission corridors or road rights-of-way to help minimize environmental and community impacts.

More construction work is progressing at the Mayo Hydro Facility, this time on the slope and surge tank replacement project.

This work is part of our broader upgrades to the Mayo Hydro Facility, which are critical to maintaining reliable, renewable generation and supporting public safety for years to come.

The project is progressing on schedule, with anchor installation nearing completion. Surge tank replacement activities are also on track, and removal of the temporary construction plug is now complete. The plug was used to isolate the work area during construction.

A major milestone has also been reached: the new surge tank has been constructed and is now operating as part of the Mayo hydro system, and the Mayo A Hydro Plant is back online.

Over the coming months, crews will continue with insulation and cladding installation, as well as electrical work associated with the surge tank.

Thank you to the crews and contractors working safely and efficiently to keep this important project moving forward.

In collaboration with Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) and EDI, Yukon Energy recently completed a fish population survey on Äshèyi Mǟn (Aishihik Lake).

This survey collects important information on the status of fish species in the lake and is a commitment under the Monitoring and Adaptive Management Plan for the operation of the Aishihik Hydro Facility. Lake whitefish are a focus species for this monitoring, as they are an indicator of ecosystem health and are an important subsistence fish species for CAFN.

Fish captured during the survey were cleaned, kept on ice/frozen and are currently being distributed within the CAFN community and to other associated beneficiaries. Samples were collected from all captured fish, along with information about their condition, including length, weight, and overall health.

Structures used to determine the age of each fish were also collected. The fish ages were then compared with environmental conditions during the year they were born and in later years, including water levels, water temperature, ice-off dates, and wind patterns.

This work is part of a larger effort to better understand and care for Äshèyi and support positive outcomes for the environment.

Water levels downstream of the hydro facility and spillway can rise or fall quickly. An audible alarm sounds before spillway gates are opened to warn of changing water flows.

Powerful currents near the spillway and turbines can create dangerous conditions.

It's important to stay alert and keep a safe distance from the dam, spillway, and other control structures.

20:10 update: power has been restored to all customers effected by this evening’s outage. Right now, it appears that the outage was caused by lightning between Minto and Stewart Crossing.

Lightning can cause a fault or sudden surge on the electricity system to happen. When this happens, equipment known as breakers open, preventing widespread damage to the power system. When the breakers open they also cause a power outage. The outage lasts until crews can isolate the fault, ensure the area is safe to reenergize and close the breaker again.

19:35 update: ATCO Electric Yukon has confirmed that the outage is affecting the areas of Takhini, Porter Creek, Mountainview and Crestview in Whitehorse. ATCO crews have begun restoration efforts in those communities.

We are aware of an outage affecting communities north of Carmacks and areas in Whitehorse. Crews have been dispatched to assess the full scope of the outage, find the cause and begin restoration. Updates to follow.

The Wareham Dam Spillway Project at our Mayo Hydro Facility has made significant progress this summer. This project is essential to ensuring the long-term reliability of the facility and protecting public safety.

Excavation along the spillway rock face is well underway, with blasting now taking place and excavated material being hauled from the site.

A major milestone this month was the start of work on the rock plug—a section of rock intentionally left in place to keep water out of the construction area while crews complete excavation.

Teams have also begun work to reduce water seepage through the rock foundation and prepare the area for the next stages of excavation and concrete placement.
