⚡SAFETY MOMENT: A power line on the ground might look harmless, but it can still be energized and extremely dangerous. Even if it isn’t sparking, making noise, or causing a power outage.

Whether you’re walking, driving, or out with your family, knowing what to do could save a life.

Remember these 4 steps:

STOP: Never approach or touch a downed power line.

STAY BACK: Keep at least 10 metres away, and stay clear of anything the line is touching, including trees, fences and vehicles. Pay special attention to keep children and pets away. When it comes to downed power lines, there’s no safe distance that’s too cautious. Stay back. Stay safe.

SPEAK UP: Warn others to keep away, but don’t put yourself at risk.

CALL FOR HELP: Report the hazard to your electricity provider. For immediate danger, call 911. Never attempt to move a wire or remove a tree or other object touching it.

Yukon Energy crews and contractors regularly work along powerlines, often in remote areas where they may not be visible from a distance.

Recently, a person was reported using a powerline right-of-way to sight in a r***e, unaware that crews were working further down the line. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the situation could have had serious consequences.

If you're out hunting this season, remember that crews may be working along powerlines, even when they're not visible. Always check the surrounding area and know what's beyond your target before shooting.

As the leaves change colour and cooler weather arrives, you may notice your electricity use starting to climb.

When temperatures drop, your home has to work harder to stay warm. A few simple changes can help you conserve electricity this fall and winter:

âś… Turn down the thermostat a few degrees if you heat your home with electricity.

âś… Use less hot water by taking shorter showers and washing clothes in cold water.

âś… Skip the dryer and air-dry your clothes when you can.

âś… Switch off unused lights when you leave a room.
