Heads up, Riverdale residents:

Between September 2 and 8, contractors on behalf of ATCO Electric will be carrying out powerline brushing work between Green Crescent and Duke Road.

You may notice crews working near fence lines behind some properties. This important maintenance helps reduce vegetation near power lines and supports the safe, reliable delivery of electricity.

Please be mindful of workers in the area and give them plenty of room to work safely.

Recent Power Outages Explained

Over the past several weeks, Whitehorse has experienced three power outages that affected a large number of customers. We understand how disruptive these interruptions can be and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Yukon's electricity system relies on our two utilities working together to deliver power to homes and businesses. Yukon Energy generates and transmits electricity across the territory, while ATCO Electric Yukon distributes that power to customers in Whitehorse and surrounding areas.

The recent outages were caused by separate events:
• August 12: This outage originated on ATCO Electric Yukon's distribution system. While the exact cause could not be confirmed, fault indicators showed evidence of a temporary fault on the line. When this happens, it's highly likely that a tree, wildlife or a bird came in contact with our electrical equipment.
• August 20: The outage occurred following a loss of supply from Yukon Energy when the Aishihik Hydro Facility experienced an electrical issue that reduced output and resulted in a loss of generation to the grid.
• August 23: The outage occurred following a loss of supply from Yukon Energy after a lightning strike on transmission lines north of Whitehorse, which affected power delivery to the area.

When a significant loss of generation occurs, automatic Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) protection is designed to quickly reduce demand and help stabilize the grid, helping to prevent a more widespread outage. In both the August 20 and August 23 events, ATCO Electric Yukon's protection systems operated as designed, and our crews worked safely and efficiently to restore service once Yukon Energy advised that power was available for restoration.

Our teams work continuously to maintain reliable service for Yukoners, but outages can occur. Having a 72-hour emergency kit and an emergency plan in place can help you and your family stay safe and prepared during power outages and other unexpected events. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue working to provide safe and reliable electricity service.
