SONI Ltd

SONI Ltd SONI is the electricity transmission system operator for Northern Ireland. We're responsible for a safe, secure supply of electricity in Northern Ireland.

We also operate the all-island wholesale electricity market through the Single Electricity Market. SONI, the Electricity Transmission System Operator for Northern Ireland, operates and develops the electricity grid. This includes interconnecting with neighbouring grids and running the wholesale electricity market. The grid brings power from generators to NIE Networks’ distribution grid that suppli

es every home, farm and business in Northern Ireland. SONI ensures electricity is always available at the most economic price – today, tomorrow and for decades to come. Electricity can be generated from renewable sources like wind and solar power. These sources of clean energy will soon replace dirty fuels like coal and oil. Because of this, electricity will increasingly be used for more reasons, like transport and heating. To prepare for this change, SONI is currently holding a consultation on how to make Northern Ireland’s electricity grid stronger and more flexible so that it can carry more renewable energy over the next decade. We want to hear your views. Find out more at https://consult.soni.ltd.uk/.

Today is World Environment Day 🌍 with a global focus on climate change.

At SONI, we’re proud to support Business in the Community Northern Ireland 'Business on Climate Action Programme' – a leading collaborative campaign encouraging organisations across Northern Ireland to take meaningful action on the climate emergency.

This World Environment Day, we’re encouraging businesses of all sizes to sign the Climate Action Pledge ✍️

With over 120 organisations already signed up, momentum is building.

The pledge is a public commitment to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% or 50% by 2030, while working towards measuring and reporting Scope 3 emissions.

By making this commitment and setting ambitious targets, organisations can demonstrate real leadership-and a willingness to collaborate in addressing one of the most critical challenges we face, as part of the journey to net zero ⚡

Progress on climate action depends on collaboration. By working together, we can turn ambition into impact 🤝

By signing the Climate Action Pledge, and setting and striving to achieve ambitious GHG reduction targets, Northern Ireland organisations can demonstrate their commitment and willingness to collaborate to address this critical issue, as part of their race to net zero.

As we work towards transforming Northern Ireland’s electricity system, we want to ensure that those most affected by our projects have the opportunity to discuss our plans.

The Mid Antrim Upgrade is a significant infrastructure project that is critical to achieving this transformation. Once completed, it will allow for more readily available renewable energy generation to be used where it is needed.

We are holding additional public drop-in events where you can chat to the project team and find out more. Join us at a venue that best suits you:

🦋 As May comes to a close, we’re proud to have supported Plantlife’s campaign.

🌼 By allowing grass to grow and wildflowers to flourish across our site, we’ve helped create important habitats for pollinators and supported local biodiversity.

🐝 It’s a simple action with a meaningful impact - and just one of the ways we’re continuing our commitment to biodiversity and sustainability, helping to protect the natural environment for future generations.

Here’s to more wildflowers, more bees, and continued action for nature.
