SONI Ltd

SONI Ltd SONI is the electricity transmission system operator for Northern Ireland. We're responsible for a safe, secure supply of electricity in Northern Ireland.

We also operate the all-island wholesale electricity market through the Single Electricity Market. SONI, the Electricity Transmission System Operator for Northern Ireland, operates and develops the electricity grid. This includes interconnecting with neighbouring grids and running the wholesale electricity market. The grid brings power from generators to NIE Networks’ distribution grid that suppli

es every home, farm and business in Northern Ireland. SONI ensures electricity is always available at the most economic price – today, tomorrow and for decades to come. Electricity can be generated from renewable sources like wind and solar power. These sources of clean energy will soon replace dirty fuels like coal and oil. Because of this, electricity will increasingly be used for more reasons, like transport and heating. To prepare for this change, SONI is currently holding a consultation on how to make Northern Ireland’s electricity grid stronger and more flexible so that it can carry more renewable energy over the next decade. We want to hear your views. Find out more at https://consult.soni.ltd.uk/.

⚡ How was Northern Ireland's power generated in July? ☀️🍃🔋

Gas remained the largest source of electricity generation at 56.8%, while renewables continued to make a significant contribution, with wind providing 31.9% of supply. Solar, hydro, battery storage and other renewable sources combined helped increase the diversity of our energy mix.

As renewable generation grows, strengthening interconnection and system flexibility will be essential to maintaining a secure, reliable and sustainable electricity supply.

We're proud to continue our partnership with Sisters-IN for a third year, helping to support and inspire the next generation of female leaders across Northern Ireland.
Over the past two years, we've seen first-hand the difference that mentoring, encouragement and positive role models can make in helping young women build confidence and believe in what's possible for their future.

Through leadership development, mentoring and real-world experiences, the programme equips young women with the skills, connections and confidence to realise their potential and pursue their ambitions.

At SONI, we believe investing in people is essential to building a stronger, more inclusive future. We're delighted to continue supporting a programme that is empowering young women across Northern Ireland to become the leaders, innovators and changemakers of tomorrow.

We’re incredibly proud of our colleagues who took on the ‘Beat the Mournes’ hike this weekend in support of our charity partner, Marie Curie - Northern Ireland💛

The fantastic team of volunteers completed the challenging route through the Mourne Mountains, showing great determination, teamwork and spirit while raising vital funds for an organisation that provides essential care and support to people living with terminal illness and their families. Together, the team raised an impressive £2,423 in support of Marie Curie.

From steep climbs to stunning views, it was a rewarding day all round, and a brilliant example of colleagues coming together to make a real difference.

A huge well done to everyone involved, and thank you to all those who supported and donated. 👏

Together, we’re helping Marie Curie continue their invaluable work across our communities.
