The Seatpost Man

The Seatpost Man The Seatpost Man is a bicycle business specialising in safely removing stuck or seized seatposts . John Lee (The Seatpost Man)

As the quality and value of a bicycle increase, the problem of a stuck or seized seatpost becomes a greater issue. Most bike shops and service centres have a varied approach to this problem but almost all will use a brute force approach if the seatpost is truly seized. Modern frame materials may not respond well to this and problems can occur. Using my engineering and bicycle background I have dev

eloped a system which will remove the seatpost (intact if possible) in a safe and frame friendly way. This will also work if a previous removal attempt may have failed. I have full experience with alloy, carbon , titanium , steel and stainless steel frames and all seatpost types including droppers and aero. As far as I am aware I have 100% customer satisfaction which justifies my design and fabrication work in the tooling I use. I work for highly respected bike shops and can accept customers at my premises or will work with a courier of your choice. For full information see my website www.theseatpostman.com
If you have a seatpost issue please feel free to contact me and I will offer any advice I can. A photograph of the bike and seat clamp area of the frame (with the seat clamp removed if possible) is always a help for me to see the setup.

So the Easter Bunny delivered my 3000th seized seatpost! This removal from Liam's carbon Cannondale makes it 13 years of 100% successful , consecutive seatpost extractions. Even happier for Liam in that it was free of charge and came with a complimentary pack of Chorley Cakes ( as do all current jobs until they run out :) )
Happy Easter Everyone!

Fat bike Friday. 2025 was a busy year for me and although I get every sort of bike imaginable in the workshop I don't recall seeing a Fat bike all year. Maybe they are like buses because knock me down with rolled copy of Exchange and Mart if two don't come in on the same day! Both now sorted and ready to hit the soft stuff.

I've been a bit lapse with the socials so belated Happy New Year to all and on with the show! This was a well used and loved Titanium Merlin frame with a very deteriorated factory fitted alloy shim that needed removal , remanufacture and refitting. As these are bonded to the frame when new they are not available as a spare part. I tend to make these shims longer than the factory spec as I feel it spreads the load to the frame well below the seat stays welds. It doesn't make them easy to bore however as the wall thickness is around 0.5mm. Satisfying result though and now shipped out to be rebuilt and passed back to it's owner and put to good use.

It's been a little while since I last posted but that's mainly down to plenty of jobs in the workshop and me being old :) . Anyways last week I had a customer (Peter) bring in his steel tourer and as usual the chat meanders and it turns out Peters son had finished a round the World cycle ride. Peter himself rode one of the ( very interesting ) legs of the journey as support and after hearing some of the adventures I suggested he should write a book. It turns out he has and I bought a copy off the man himself. Peter and Pedr - The Seatpost Man salutes you !

A recent job on a Giant TCR were the saddle clamp had broken and the owner then discovered the seatpost was seized. The attempt to remove had left little showing from the frame. Often with these types of seizures (carbon/carbon) the issue is not with the seatpost and frame per se, it is the alloy internal seat clamp that has oxidised and swollen, effectively clamping the seatpost even with the bolt removed. As ever seatpost safely removed and frame cleaned up ready for a new seatpost. A ''Big'' shout out to for the sample cleaning wipes, it should mean fewer grubby fingerprints on customers nice paintwork 😉.

My next couple of posts are going to be cautionary, informative and may have images that upset some people...... viewer discretion is advised.
Undue force can and ultimately will destroy a frame. Twisting, pulling and writhing at a seized seatpost especially in a carbon frame is like rolling the dice of doom.
Here is example of a seatpost that had been crushed in a vice to attempt to twist out.
The seatpost had gone oval perilously close to the frame (again this can crack the frame due to distortion) but fortunately the frame was showing no signs of stress.
Seatpost safely removed without force and seat tube polished out ready for a new post.....
