This week, Riversimple founder Hugo Spowers MBE Spowers is at the annual (SMI) Roundtables & Exhibition at Hampton Court Palace, which opened officially on Wednesday.

Brian Moynihan, Chair & CEO, Bank of America and Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, M.V.O., MBA CEO, Sustainable Markets Initiative hosted the opening plenary – with a powerful case for sustainability based on long-term value creation and economic resilience.

Riversimple is an affiliate of the SMI, and many of our values and goals are aligned with the guiding principles of this extraordinary organisation – which is to put ‘Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation.’

This year there’s a big focus on actualising tangible solutions for a sustainable future, ones that span sectors and geographies – and even into space, with Astra Carta. Space plays a critical role today and we need to look after it too; infrastructure, health, mobility, indeed most areas of modern life are dependent on it so the two programmes are complementary.

Hugo has joined a kaleidoscope of CEOs, leaders and remarkable innovators from around the world, highlights and photos below:

🌿An illuminating panel on Nature’s Value with David Craig of on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Chief Perry Bellegrade, Troy Rudd, CEO of AECOM and others

🛕Hampton Court Palace and the great hall – a reminder of the brilliance of human design and engineering – once used for aristocratic entertainment, now for planning a sustainable future for all.

More to follow soon from the closing of the very action-focused summit.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 ⛽️💧

The chicken and egg idiom really isn’t relevant to H2 refueling, even though it’s wheeled out fairly often.

Hydrogen infrastructure can only emerge 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘭 with hydrogen vehicles rather than in advance of them. Hydrogen uptake will start locally rather than everywhere all at once – in concert with robust embedded networks, like the one emerging in Paris, and the European Union Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) mandate for publicly accessible hydrogen refuelers in corridors and in urban nodes by 2030.

Widespread uptake of hydrogen cars will start catchment by catchment with local refueling hubs and then build out organically. Read more:

We’re proud affiliates of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, which has this week launched their new official Instagram channel 🌱

The Sustainable Markets Initiative was founded by His Majesty King Charles III, then The Prince of Wales to seize “The Growth Story of Our Time” – by putting Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation.

The Terra Carta is the guiding mandate of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, and was launched in January 2021. Not long after this, His Majesty King Charles III, then The Prince of Wales, visited our HQ in Wales and took the Rasa for a test drive – his passionate interest in sustainability was evident, and he took great interest in people and work behind our vehicles and business structure.

Hugo Spowers had the pleasure of attending the Sustainable Markets Initiative Terra Carta Roundtables & Exhibition at Hampton Court Palace, early this year, and he’s pictured below with Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, and one of our hydrogen electric cars, the Rasa.

💧It’s like refuelling a petrol or diesel car and takes a few minutes.

💧If you can’t charge at home (around half of UK homes don’t have off-street parking) this is a great zero-emission option.

💧Existing forecourts can be adapted for hydrogen refuelling.

💧Infrastructure has been slow to come, but it’s gaining traction. This year, clean hydrogen reached a big milestone – there is now $110 billion in investment committed across more than 500 projects worldwide, a $35 billion increase since last year.

🅿️Cardiff is the first UK council to charge more for parking larger vehicles. London, is it your turn?

🚙💨 Clean Cities says the number of SUVs in London has grown from 80,000 SUVs in 2002 to over 800,000 SUVs in 2023. London has made remarkable strides towards cleaner air – why not make it even better?

Paris introduced more expensive parking for SUVs last year – larger cars now pay triple the usual charges. Paris, too, is creating a healthy city, with fewer polluting vehicles, better active travel and behaviour change measures like the SUV charge.

It’s obvious heavy cars = worse pedestrian safety and less space for others, higher resource consumption, embedded carbon in manufacturing, higher energy consumption on the road and degraded air and water quality from tyre emissions – which are pro rata to mass whatever powertrain is used.

Thrilled to have Monty Foley - Williamson from green hydrogen providers Protium at our HQ in Wales today 🚗💧

We had great discussions about green hydrogen supply and Monty had a good look around our workshops and got up close with our hydrogen fuel cell car, the Rasa. Pictured with Monty is James Emery, who is responsible for our refueller in Abergavenny.

Protium is a full value chain green hydrogen energy solutions provider. We know that green hydrogen – hydrogen created with renewables, like wind and solar – wherever possible – will be a big part of the transition from fossil fuels 💧☀️⚡️

👥 🚗The Riversimple daily ‘Startup’ meeting on !

Our vehicles are still providing the most impressive data on our hydrogen fuel cell powertrains; so we’re celebrating H2 this morning, with some routine testing after our meeting room sit-down with Hugo Spowers MBE, James Emery, Kenyon Montana, Jonathon Price and Nico Sergent.

⚛️ So, why is World Hydrogen day today? It’s 8 October – and hydrogen’s atomic weight is 1.008 – a good date to recognise the lightestelement.

💧Hydrogen, specifically green hydrogen, will be a big part of humankind’s decarbonisation. Hydrogen is part of a kaleidoscope of solutions that will enable a transition away from fossil fuel dependence, and all the volatility and environmental harm that comes with this.

☀️⚡️Ultimately, we’d like our circular, highly efficient vehicles to be refueled with green hydrogen whenever possible, which will further reduce our already very light well-to-wheel emissions.

Our Story

Riversimple is a new kind of business, designed from scratch to pursue our purpose: the systematic elimination of the environmental impact of personal transport. We’re the world’s only independent hydrogen car manufacturer, and the only one to adopt a circular business model. We’ve spent the last 18 years developing a radically new hydrogen-powered fuel cell car, the Rasa – it emits nothing but a tiny amount of water and will do more than the equivalent of 250 mpg. Refuelling takes just 3 minutes.

We’re commencing a Clean Mobility Trial with our cars in Abergavenny this year, in partnership with Monmouthshire County Council. Calls for beta-testers attracted 1,000 applications. Around 100 participants will take part, and they will have direct feedback into the customer model as well as the design of the production cars. We’ve built a hydrogen refuelling hub in Abergavenny.

In February 2019, we were awarded £1.25m from OLEV to support our Clean Mobility Trial. This boosts funding from the Welsh Government and the EU. We have also raised over £2.2m in two separate crowdfunding rounds since 2016. We’re taking pre-registrations for the third round now. Investors will have a chance to be a part of a business poised for the transition to fossil-free mobility. https://www.seedrs.com/riversimple We’re building a fundamentally new form of business system that aligns our interests with our customers’ and the environment’s. There’s no trade off between profit and purpose. We love what we’re doing and we hope you will too. We’re actively seeking commercial partners and employees.
