Riversimple Radically different hydrogen electric car 20 years in the making. Zero-emission, refuels in minutes. Our aim is mobility at zero cost to the planet.

REDESIGNING CARS, REDEFINING BUSINESS

Riversimple is a new kind of business, designed from scratch to pursue our purpose: the systematic elimination of the environmental impact of personal transport. We’ve designed a radically different car. It emits nothing but a tiny amount of water and will do more than the equivalent of 200 mpg. We’re building a fundamentally new form of business system that

aligns our interests with our customers’ and the environment’s. There’s no trade off between profit and purpose. We love what we’re doing and we hope you will too. We’re actively seeking commercial partners and employees. We’re always interested to hear from likeminded pioneering people and companies.

Our Director of Communications, Fiona Spowers, spent last week at the inaugural Unreasonable Alchemy gathering in Chipping Norton, along with 99 other ‘unreasonable’ Fellows from around the world.

✨As Fiona says: “There is nothing more inspiring than spending time with people quietly getting on with solving urgent environmental and social challenges. When you put 99 of them from around the world in the same room, the power of transformation is palpable. I was struck by the individuals themselves – their capability and their resourcefulness, their passion and their modesty.

“Riversimple has been connected with the Unreasonable community for ten years now. A big thank you to the whole Unreasonable team and all the mentors – too many to name here – who accompany radical visionaries all the way on their sometimes bumpy journeys.”

🕵️‍♂️Our Head of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powertrain, Nico Sergent has recently been super busy researching and sourcing a new fuel cell for our ZELLOR vehicles, and ultimately, our production vehicles. Nico visited:

🇩🇪 EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies GmbH near Stuttgart — a large-scale fuel cell stack and component manufacturer; their products are used in various applications, from forklifts to buses and trucks.

🇫🇷 Axane, part of Air Liquide near Grenoble — their team is doing amazing work, and they had an appreciation and understanding and interest in Riversimple’s circular business model.

🇫🇷 More French excellence from Symbio, based in Lyon. Symbio has the largest integrated fuel cell plant in Europe, with a strong automotive focus.

🇨🇭EHGROUP LTD in Nyon — their innovative approach results in lightweight, compact fuel cells – with great potential for volume production.

Hydrogen refuelling took a big stride forward this week ⏩⏩⏩

🚗💦Riversimple’s Jonathan Price, James Emery and one of our hydrogen electric Rasas joined the opening of the HyKit Bicester manufacturing facility – and the launch of the company’s Mobile Hydrogen Refuller, MHR-X75.

⛽️⏱️💧Rapid, on-demand hydrogen refuelling, made with 90% UK/European components – there’s a lot to be excited about.

🙏A big thanks to HyKit CEO Alastair Gorton, HyKit Director of Engineering, Dr John Vickers and the whole HyKit team for a fascinating and forward-looking event – and also for a speedy refuel of the Rasa.

ZELLOR Update 🚗 We recently had a very important salvage mission to find the perfect ‘mule’ – the test vehicle we’ll use to house the new powertrain – which will use a hydrogen fuel cell and other advanced components and technologies.

The mule needs to be aerodynamic; lightweight, of course; and offer the right packaging opportunities for our new powertrain. Our choice: the Audi A2. 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗔𝟮 𝟯𝗟𝘀 – 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼; 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹!

So In February, we undertook a deeply satisfying rescue mission, and unearthed the perfect mule for the start of the ZELLOR mission, literally dragging it out of the hedge.

The vehicle is now stripped and refurbished; currently spinning smoothly on our rollover jig or rotisserie; it’s being modified and fitted with the advanced new ZELLOR hydrogen powertrain. Read more in our May ZELLOR Report here ➡️ link in bio

Our founder Hugo Spowers visited HyKit in Bicester last week with one of our hydrogen electric Rasas 🚘⛽️

HyKit is creating the infrastructure — advanced compressors, storage solutions, and refuelling systems – to support the deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles and also machinery. Their systems are affordable and can be easily dropped onto forecourts to refuel cars like ours.

Hugo joined HyKit Chief Engineer, Dr. John Vickers and Ben Madden, CTO at the hydrogen investment fund HYCap 👋

The car industry is no different. Inbuilt obsolescence, depreciation, overcomplexity dominates – and durability, longevity and resource preservation are rare.

We’ve designed our cars to last, with resource preservation – and the joy of driving – front of mind.

Big news 📢 Riversimple is the lead company for the new for £1.7M ZELLOR project – supported by grant funding as part of the UK Government’s £4 billion DRIVE35 programme.

ZELLOR (Zero Emission Lightweight Long Range) is demonstrating a vehicle with the unprecedented combination of zero emissions, 400 mile range and low weight.

The automotive industry is facing a trilemma – how to deliver this combination all at once – and weight is usually the casualty. ZELLOR will deliver lightness and range beyond the current state of the art, with a vehicle that is under 1,000kg (half the weight of current ZEVs with the same range), can seat four people and has a range of over 400 miles. Delivery will be before January 2027, and will use a lightweight, low drag donor vehicle, a modified Audi A2. The ZELLOR project is based in our workshops in New Radnor.

We’re honoured to be working with some exceptional partners: pioneering power electronics with superior efficiency from TTPi - The Thinking Pod Innovations Ltd; and further development of Riversimple’s hydrogen fuel cell powertrain will use a vehicle development tool based on machine-learning, Pi-Hive, being developed by Pi-Consultancy.

Shareholders benefit from better governance too; resilience in a volatile world depends on preserving the resources that we need to thrive.

Like our cars and business model, our corporate governance is radically different. Our Future Guardian Governance™ model means stakeholders are represented by six Custodians who assiduously and equally represent: customers, investors, the environment, the community, the staff and our commercial partners.

The board’s duty is to balance and protect the benefits it delivers to these six critical stakeholder groups – and align with our purpose: personal mobility with zero environmental impact.

Our work on this is recognised. Our governance model is a case study for the University of Exeter and Cambridge and has been highlighted by EY’s New Economic Unit and UKGBC.

Meet our accomplished Custodians, and find out more about Future Guardian Governance here 🔷on our site. We’re also seeking a Customer Custodian.

This week, Riversimple founder Hugo Spowers MBE Spowers is at the annual (SMI) Roundtables & Exhibition at Hampton Court Palace, which opened officially on Wednesday.

Brian Moynihan, Chair & CEO, Bank of America and Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, M.V.O., MBA CEO, Sustainable Markets Initiative hosted the opening plenary – with a powerful case for sustainability based on long-term value creation and economic resilience.

Riversimple is an affiliate of the SMI, and many of our values and goals are aligned with the guiding principles of this extraordinary organisation – which is to put ‘Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation.’

This year there’s a big focus on actualising tangible solutions for a sustainable future, ones that span sectors and geographies – and even into space, with Astra Carta. Space plays a critical role today and we need to look after it too; infrastructure, health, mobility, indeed most areas of modern life are dependent on it so the two programmes are complementary.

Hugo has joined a kaleidoscope of CEOs, leaders and remarkable innovators from around the world, highlights and photos below:

☀️Andrew Forrest of and his incredibly forthright views on shifting aggressively to renewables (including hydrogen) at a ‘fireside chat’

🌿An illuminating panel on Nature’s Value with David Craig of on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Chief Perry Bellegrade, Troy Rudd, CEO of AECOM and others

🛕Hampton Court Palace and the great hall – a reminder of the brilliance of human design and engineering – once used for aristocratic entertainment, now for planning a sustainable future for all.

More to follow soon from the closing of the very action-focused summit.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 ⛽️💧

The chicken and egg idiom really isn’t relevant to H2 refueling, even though it’s wheeled out fairly often.

Hydrogen infrastructure can only emerge 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘭 with hydrogen vehicles rather than in advance of them. Hydrogen uptake will start locally rather than everywhere all at once – in concert with robust embedded networks, like the one emerging in Paris, and the European Union Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) mandate for publicly accessible hydrogen refuelers in corridors and in urban nodes by 2030.

Widespread uptake of hydrogen cars will start catchment by catchment with local refueling hubs and then build out organically. Read more:
