QUESTIONS WE'RE ASKED ABOUT SOLAR ☀️

How much of the electricity generated by solar will my farm actually use?
➡️ It depends on the farm.

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, but every agricultural business has a different pattern of energy use.

Milking, refrigeration, ventilation, grain drying, irrigation pumps, water pumps, lighting and other equipment can all affect how much electricity a farm uses and when it uses it.

Any electricity generated that isn't used on site can potentially be exported to the grid, with eligible generators able to receive payment for their exported electricity.

But when we're assessing a solar installation, it's not simply about how much electricity the panels can generate.

We need to understand how your farm uses energy, too.

That's why looking at your individual energy consumption is an important part of designing a solar system that makes sense for your operation.

❔ Questions we get asked about solar

"How do I know if solar could work for my farm?"

There isn't a single answer, because every farm is different.

The size and orientation of your buildings, available space, electricity consumption and the way your farm operates can all influence what type of solar system could be suitable.

That's why the starting point isn't simply counting how many panels could fit on your roof.

At Russells Renewables, we can assess your site and energy requirements to help you understand the potential for solar and what options could work for your farm.

Could your farm buildings be generating your own electricity? ☀️🌾

Farms can have something many businesses don't: significant roof space across agricultural buildings.

That space could potentially be used for solar PV, helping generate electricity on site for the farm's own energy requirements.

Whether it's a large agricultural building, workshop or other suitable premises, the starting point is understanding the building, the available space and how the farm uses electricity.

Every farm is different, which is why solar needs to be designed around the individual site.

☀️ Is your commercial building making the most of its roof space?

For many businesses, the roof could be doing more than simply keeping the rain out.

Large, uninterrupted roof areas can provide an ideal opportunity for solar generation – particularly for businesses with significant daytime electricity demand.

From agricultural buildings and warehouses to manufacturing facilities, solar can help businesses generate electricity where it is being used, making better use of existing space while reducing reliance on grid-supplied energy.

And it’s not just about rooftops. Depending on the site, ground-mounted solar could also be an option where suitable land is available.

Could your building or site have untapped solar potential?
Our team can help you explore what might be possible.

☀️ THINKING ABOUT SOLAR FOR YOUR FARM?

Before looking at how many panels you could fit on the roof, there are a few important things to consider (and we'll help you assess all of these things).

⚡ Your electricity usage – How much energy does your farm use, and when is that energy being used?

🚜 Available space – Could your existing buildings provide suitable roof space, or could ground-mounted solar be an option?

🔧 Your future plans – Are you planning new buildings, expanding your operations or adding equipment that could increase your electricity demand?

Every farm is different, which is why there's no one-size-fits-all solar solution.

At Russells Renewables, we look at the building, the site and how your farm operates to help establish what could work for you.

☀️ When does your farm use the most electricity?

It might seem like the obvious starting point for solar is simply looking at how much electricity your farm uses.

But when you use that electricity matters too. From milking and refrigeration to grain drying, ventilation, lighting and machinery, agricultural businesses can have significant energy demands throughout the day.

Understanding your electricity usage patterns can help build a clearer picture of whether solar could work for your farm and how much of the energy you generate could potentially be used on site.

That’s why we look beyond the roof when considering a solar installation. The right system needs to make sense for the building, the site and the way your farm operates.

A year after Russell’s Renewables designed and installed this 85 kWp solar PV system, it’s performing as planned – with the farm’s irrigation requirements covered and surplus electricity being exported to the grid.

The system was designed around the farm’s actual energy use, including significant electricity demand for 24/7 water pumping during the irrigation season.

Rather than adding battery storage, our analysis showed that a larger solar PV system was the better fit for the farm’s needs.

The result:

☀️ 85 kWp solar PV
⚡ 70,400 kWh predicted annual generation
💷 5 years 4 months original payback period
📈 Surplus generation exported to the grid for additional income through SEG payments

And our support didn’t stop when the installation was complete. The customer has continued to work with the Russell’s Renewables team, including discussions around energy tariffs.

“They’ve been excellent and the system has performed perfectly for our requirements.”

📆 One year on: how solar is performing for this Nottinghamshire farm

What happens after the solar panels are installed?

For this Nottinghamshire arable farm, the answer has been very positive.

A year after Russell’s Renewables designed and installed the 85 kWp solar PV system, it continues to perform as planned – and our team has remained in contact with the customer beyond installation, including discussions around energy tariffs.

For us, the relationship doesn’t end when the installation is complete. We’re here to support customers as their energy needs develop.

We’re pleased to have joined the Farm Retail Association as a supplier member.

Farm shops and farm retail businesses have their own energy demands, and understanding how a business uses electricity is an important starting point when considering renewable energy.

As part of our FRA membership, we’re offering members a free assessment of their property, including a renewable energy proposal tailored to their requirements, along with support with the grid application process.

As part of Russells, we already understand the practical needs of farming and rural businesses. We’re looking forward to connecting with more farm retailers through the Farm Retail Association and helping businesses explore whether renewable energy could work for them.
