A Grade II listed thatched barn in the Pewsey Vale, carefully demolished to ground level and completely rebuilt. Every historical principal timber was set aside, repaired and reused within the new frame.

The barn was rebuilt on a new substructure with as much respect to the original as possible, including an extended zinc-clad stoop creating a contemporary garden room facing the setting sun. Inside, polished concrete floors and full-height glazing bring it firmly into the 21st century.

Part of an extensive restoration of the adjoining Grade II listed Georgian manor house.

We're proud to have Moulding the Builder back as a sponsor of the Chalke History Festival this year.

An eight-generation family building company based in South Newton, Moulding has been restoring and building country houses since 1798. They know a thing or two about making history and keeping it standing.

We look forward to having them back with us again 22-28 June in Broad Chalke for a week of talks, living history and more.

The sort of house England does supremely well…

A Grade I listed garden front, 18th-century in character, restored by us a few years back.

Still one of our favourites.
