Tudor Design & Build were delighted to deliver this exceptional project in collaboration with Simon Knight Architects —a partnership that helped bring our client’s vision to life in one of the most picturesque and historic areas of St Albans. It has truly been one of our favourite projects to date, transforming a modest bungalow into a beautifully generous family home.
The scheme involved a full renovation and thoughtful reconfiguration of the property. A defining feature of the design was the removal of the existing roof structure and ceilings, allowing us to open up the living spaces into a striking vaulted form. This space is now supported by exposed oak timber trusses, which not only provide essential structure but also introduce warmth, texture, and timeless character to the home.
The entrance hallway was also completely reimagined—previously dark and confined, it is now a bright and welcoming vaulted space that sets the tone for the rest of the house. Throughout the property, all windows, doors, fascias, and soffits were replaced, giving the exterior a fresh, cohesive aesthetic in keeping with its charming surroundings.
Comfort and efficiency were key considerations, with upgraded insulation installed wherever possible and underfloor heating incorporated throughout. The former side conservatory was replaced with a well-insulated extension, seamlessly integrating with the existing structure while enhancing both usability and energy performance.
Inside, bold interior choices and thoughtful detailing complement the architectural features, creating a home that feels both characterful and contemporary. The craftsmanship of the oak trusses is a particular highlight, elevating the main living areas and hallway with a sense of scale and quality that defines the entire project.
