GEORG at BRYCK Tech Tour Energy & Decarbonisation 2025!

At this year’s Tech Tour Energy & Decarbonisation in Essen, GEORG and Landsvirkjun co-organized a dedicated geothermal session that brought together industry leaders, investors, and experts to explore expansion pathways for geothermal energy in Europe and beyond.

We discussed the latest in geothermal innovation, emerging business models, and the role of cross-sector partnerships in accelerating deployment and investment. A big thank-you to our partners, speakers, and participants for an inspiring event!

Superhot geothermal is no longer just a concept — it’s a frontier under construction, and it has been in Iceland since decades.

Last month, GEORG had the pleasure of co-hosting and contributing to COMPASS Iceland Week, a concentrated programme of strategy, learning, and dialogue around the future of SHG development in Iceland and beyond - with the support of the COMPASS consortium and our valued partners atOrkuveitan and / ON Power.

Across the final General Assembly, the international Summer School, and the national Stakeholder Workshop, the week showcased what makes this field move forward: collaboration across disciplines, generations, and institutions.

🔹 A heartfelt thank-you to all participants, panellists, and contributors for your time, insight, and momentum.

📣 GEORG Annual Report 2024 is here!

We are proud to share the GEORG Annual Report 2024, reflecting another impactful year of advancing geothermal innovation through collaboration, research, and policy engagement.

While the year marked structural changes — most notably the spin-off of the Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT) into an independent entity — Geothermal Research Cluster - GEORG continued to demonstrate its strength as an incubator and catalyst for high-impact initiatives.

💡 In 2024, GEORG solidified its role as a leader in supporting the development of superhot geothermal technologies, while also driving critical research into the social acceptance of geothermal energy. At the same time, we remained a central actor in European policy dialogue, building bridges between research, industry, and governance.

As part of the GeoThermal Bridge Initiative (GBI)—funded by the EEA and Norway Grants—the final workshop took place in Oradea, Romania on 28-30 January 2025. This initiative was designed to strengthen cooperation between countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Iceland, focusing on low- to medium-temperature geothermal energy development.

Participants from Romania, Iceland, Poland, and GEOTHERMICA Initiative Member States came together to share expertise and explore collaboration opportunities in various sectors related to geothermal energy.

Key workshop highlights include:
✅ Research & education exchanges to build geothermal capacity
✅ Using geothermal energy for food production, tourism & value creation
✅ Advancing district heating systems with sustainable geothermal solutions
✅ Enhancing legal frameworks for geothermal projects
✅ Discussing social license to operate within local communities

The GBI has successfully laid the groundwork for new partnerships and long-term collaboration between Romania, Iceland, and other countries in the region. This milestone marks an important step in promoting clean energy, innovation, and regional cooperation—and we, at GEORG, couldn't be more proud.
