Today, as we commemorate the 128th Philippine Independence Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism of the Filipinos who fought for our nation’s freedom. Their struggle was not merely for independence from colonial rule, but for the vision of a country where dignity, justice, and opportunity are enjoyed by all. More than a century later, their legacy continues to challenge us to reflect on what it truly means to be free.

While we celebrate the sovereignty won through the sacrifices of our forebears, we must also recognize that the pursuit of freedom remains unfinished. Currently, the Philippine education system continues to face challenges, such as underfunded institutions, unequal access to quality education, persistent learning gaps, and curricula that sometimes struggle to connect scientific and academic knowledge with the lived realities of the Filipino people despite the dedication of educators and students. Across the country, many Filipinos continue to face rising living costs, inadequate wages, precarious employment, healthcare, and increasing economic uncertainty. Recent debates surrounding government accountability and public trust further emphasize that independence is not only a historical achievement, rather, it is an ongoing responsibility that requires participation and collective action from all sectors of society.

As members of a scientific and academic community, The UPLB Genetics Society believes that genuine nation-building is rooted in informed citizenship, critical inquiry, and a commitment to truth. Science has always been a tool for progress, but its benefits can only be fully realized in a society that values transparency, accountability, and the welfare of its people.

This Independence Day, may we remember that patriotism extends beyond remembrance. It is found in speaking truth in the face of injustice, in standing with marginalized communities, in defending democratic principles, and in working toward a nation where freedom is not merely commemorated every June 12, but experienced by every Filipino every day.

On May 11, 2026, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte for the second time, with more than the constitutionally required number of lawmakers supporting the Articles of Impeachment. However, just hours before the impeachment moved forward, the Senate underwent a dramatic leadership change as Senator Alan Peter Cayetano replaced Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III as Senate President through an internal vote.

Adding to the controversy is the return of Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, who had largely stayed away from Senate sessions in recent months amid pressure related to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) investigation into the Duterte administration’s drug war. Reports indicate that Sen. dela Rosa returned to participate in the vote that installed Sen. Cayetano as Senate President, even as the ICC confirmed an arrest warrant accusing him of crimes against humanity linked to thousands of extrajudicial killings during his tenure as police chief. Video footage and reports further showed attempts by law enforcement authorities to serve the warrant within Senate premises, while some allies moved to shield him from immediate arrest.

In light of these events, The UPLB Genetics Society strongly condemns the continued spectacle of political opportunism, impunity, and power play within the country’s institutions. It is infuriating to witness public officials treat governance as a stage for self-preservation rather than genuine public service, especially when Filipinos are burdened by inflation, rising oil prices, labor exploitation, underfunded social services, and worsening economic insecurity.

THE SENATE IS NOT A CIRCUS, AND THE FILIPINO PEOPLE ARE NOT AN AUDIENCE MEANT TO SILENTLY ENDURE INCOMPETENCE AND POLITICAL THEATRICS.

LAHAT NG SANGKOT, DAPAT MANAGOT!
IMPEACH SARA NOW!
ARREST DELA ROSA NOW!

Following the deaths of the Negros 19, dehumanizing remarks online reduced victims of violence into objects of mockery. Dr. Fortun firmly rejected this stressing that the dead were human beings deserving of dignity and respect.

While the military claimed that all 19 individuals killed were members of the NPA, the NPA itself acknowledged only 10. Among the nine identified civilians were community journalist RJ Nichole Ledesma, UP students Alyssa Alano and Maureen Keil Santuyo, community researcher Errol Wendel, Filipino-American activists Kai Dana-Rene Sorem and Lyle Prijoles, local resident Roel Sabillo, and two minors.

The UPLB Genetics Society stands in solidarity with the families, communities, journalists, researchers, students, and advocates calling for truth, accountability, and justice for the Negros 19. At a time when violence is too easily normalized, we must continue to affirm the humanity behind every life lost.

Dr. Raquel Fortun, forensic pathologist and an Honorary Member of The UPLB Genetics Society, reminds us of a truth that should never have to be defended: “You know what they look like? TAO.”

As Dr. Fortun herself emphasized, these were not labels or punchlines. THEY ARE PEOPLE.

'DISTURBING CONCERNS': Dr Fortun identified alarming issues such as the apparent absence of a credible crime scene investigation; the misidentification of the remains of several victims, including Errol Wendel, whose family reportedly received the wrong cadaver; and the removal of the victims’ clothing, a critical piece of forensic evidence, which was later piled together and discarded.

“I keep saying this is the 21st century. The fact that you (military and police) are still doing it, and the fact that you’re even proud of doing it, you should be ashamed."

Read the report of Altermidya below.

FORENSIC pathologist Dr. Raquel Fortun has raised a series of disturbing concerns over the military’s handling of both the remains and the alleged crime

The Biocomputing Workshop successfully commenced last April 23 in collaboration with the Institute of Biological Sciences and our invited resource persons Roman Fornesa of Animal Biology Division and Dr. Andrew Montecillo of Microbiology Division. Hands on Phylogenetic Inference of Unknown Bacteria using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and open-source GIS software was imparted to two batches of students awaiting new biocomputing knowledge.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all participants who showed enthusiasm during the workshop. We hope to see you all and more in the next installments! 💻💙💜

The UPLB Genetics Society proudly looks back on the opening of BIO 30 Week 2026 last April 20, 2026, where we officially launched the exhibit for this BIO 30 Week’s theme “𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄-𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥: 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐞𝐱 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐗𝐗 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐗𝐘 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.” 💅🌈 From the ribbon-cutting ceremony to the first wave of students stepping into the exhibit, Day 1 was nothing short of iconic!

The exhibit welcomed students into an experience filled with learning that challenged binaries and showcased the complexity of s*x and genetics, proving that biology has always been more diverse than we think. 🧬

To everyone who showed up, explored, and engaged with our displays, maraming salamat for making the opening a success! 💖 This is only the beginning of more conversations, discoveries, and moments that celebrate the science of genetics and identity.

Stay tuned as we continue to share highlights from this year’s BIO 30 Week, because the slay doesn’t stop here! 💅✨
