Today, as we commemorate the 128th Philippine Independence Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism of the Filipinos who fought for our nation’s freedom. Their struggle was not merely for independence from colonial rule, but for the vision of a country where dignity, justice, and opportunity are enjoyed by all. More than a century later, their legacy continues to challenge us to reflect on what it truly means to be free.
While we celebrate the sovereignty won through the sacrifices of our forebears, we must also recognize that the pursuit of freedom remains unfinished. Currently, the Philippine education system continues to face challenges, such as underfunded institutions, unequal access to quality education, persistent learning gaps, and curricula that sometimes struggle to connect scientific and academic knowledge with the lived realities of the Filipino people despite the dedication of educators and students. Across the country, many Filipinos continue to face rising living costs, inadequate wages, precarious employment, healthcare, and increasing economic uncertainty. Recent debates surrounding government accountability and public trust further emphasize that independence is not only a historical achievement, rather, it is an ongoing responsibility that requires participation and collective action from all sectors of society.
As members of a scientific and academic community, The UPLB Genetics Society believes that genuine nation-building is rooted in informed citizenship, critical inquiry, and a commitment to truth. Science has always been a tool for progress, but its benefits can only be fully realized in a society that values transparency, accountability, and the welfare of its people.
This Independence Day, may we remember that patriotism extends beyond remembrance. It is found in speaking truth in the face of injustice, in standing with marginalized communities, in defending democratic principles, and in working toward a nation where freedom is not merely commemorated every June 12, but experienced by every Filipino every day.
