At ISC 2026, the Alliance of Supercomputing Centres (ASC) convened again, bringing together a network of leading high performance computing (HPC) centres for an afternoon of insightful discussions.

Hosted by NSCC and co-moderated with Calcul Québec, we were joined by 國研院國網中心 (NCHC Taiwan) and CSC Finland to address two critical questions - What are some emerging trends, observations and challenges arising from the uptick in HPC-AI convergence? What can HPC Centres do to address and adapt to these shifts?

As HPC and AI rapidly converge, it is crucial for HPC centres to support hybrid workloads encompassing large-scale AI training, inference, external AI services and emerging agentic workflows.

With this evolution, HPC centres must carefully navigate the balance between traditional scientific workloads and resource-intensive AI services, manage dynamic workloads and make strategic decisions regarding which workloads are appropriate to be run on national infrastructure. We must also prepare for the next generation of HPC services and develop the necessary capabilities, such as workflow orchestration, AI model optimisation, reliable computing environments and hybrid HPC-cloud architectures.

Ultimately, while robust and advanced HPC infrastructure is key to supporting future workloads, it is also crucial to ensure that HPC centres provide services that empower the wider community so that these capabilities can be effectively harnessed.

Day 1 of ISC26 has officially kickstarted, starting off the event strong with a series of technical sessions, strategic collaborations, and community networking.

Student Cluster Competitions (SCCs)

With the SCC underway, we cheer on National University of Singapore's Team Kent Ridge and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore's Team Supernova as they represent Singapore on the global stage. One of the most demanding undergraduate challenges in high performance computing (HPC), we are proud to see our local students participate at this level, gaining hands-on experience in running applications on remote clusters.

Alliance of Supercomputing Centres (ASC) Meeting

On the strategic front, NSCC co-hosted the ASC meeting alongside Calcul Québec. Comprising a global network of HPC organisations, the meeting served as a platform to exchange vital insights on managing next-generations supercomputing facilities, as well as navigating current paradigm shifts, such as the convergence of HPC and AI. NSCC also shared on our initiatives to address these evolving demands and prepare for the future of HPC and AI-enabled research.

NSCC Networking Night

The day concluded with NSCC Singapore’s Networking Night. We extend our sincere gratitude to all our ecosystem partners and friends - both long-standing colleagues and new connections - who joined us for an evening of conversation and exchange . It was a privilege to bring the local and international HPC communities together to foster collaboration, share perspectives and build relationships over excellent food and warm conversation.

“There is always more to learn if you actively seek it out.”

For Alex Ng Jun Xiang, a former NSCC intern, learning wasn’t just scheduled into the calendar - even casual conversations turned into opportunities to learn more about HPC, research and systems work.

During his internship, he built a tool to analyse the reliability of performance tests across different workloads, using system-level signals to account for differences in results. He also explored performance beyond the numbers, optimising critical math functions for different scenarios.

With the explosion of data and the rapid advances in AI, NSCC Singapore is committed to supporting the research community with the infrastructure to meet this unprecedented demand for compute power, and empower our users to harness the full potential of HPC.

On 8 June, Minister Josephine Teo officially launched ASPIRE 2B, Singapore’s newest and most powerful national supercomputer. Coinciding with NSCC’s 10th anniversary, this milestone marks a 100-fold increase in national compute power over the last decade.

The event gathered over 100 distinguished representatives from the government, research institutions and industry partners for a day of celebration, data centre tours and poster presentations.

We celebrated the launch of ASPIRE 2B at the NTU Innovation Centre, with our Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Digital Development and Information and Minister-in-charge of Cybersecurity and Smart Nation Group, Mrs Josephine Teo.

In her address, Minister Teo highlighted the growing computational demands of next-generation AI and the importance of using advanced infrastructure effectively to deliver meaningful research outcomes.

Marking NSCC's 10th anniversary, Chief Executive Dr Terence Hung, reflected on how ASPIRE 2B represents both how far Singapore's HPC capabilities have come and where the future of research is heading. He reaffirmed NSCC's commitment to supporting researchers with the infrastructure, expertise and resources needed to drive innovation.

The event also included data centre tours and poster presentations showcasing how advanced computing is enabling breakthroughs across research domains.

Launched 10 years after Singapore's first national supercomputer, ASPIRE 1, ASPIRE 2B represents a hundred-fold increase in compute power in just over a decade. More importantly, it marks a significant step forward in enabling researchers to tackle increasingly complex challenges in AI, engineering, healthcare, climate science and beyond.

As research continues to evolve, NSCC will continue to empower researchers to dream bigger, compute faster and innovate more boldly.
