A national research infrastructure that supports the high performance computing R&D needs of Singapore's public and private sectors, including research institutes, institutes of higher learning, government agencies and local companies. The National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore was established in 2015 and manages Singapore’s first national petascale facility with available high performanc

e computing (HPC) resources to support science and engineering computing needs for academic, research and industry communities. Funded by its stakeholders, including Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), with substantial funding from Ministry of Trade and Industry, NSCC’s vision is to democratise access to supercomputing, and is catalytic in supporting national research and development initiatives, attracting industrial research collaborations and enhancing Singapore’s research capabilities.

We celebrated the launch of ASPIRE 2B at the NTU Innovation Centre, with our Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Digital Development and Information and Minister-in-charge of Cybersecurity and Smart Nation Group, Mrs Josephine Teo.

In her address, Minister Teo highlighted the growing computational demands of next-generation AI and the importance of using advanced infrastructure effectively to deliver meaningful research outcomes.

Marking NSCC's 10th anniversary, Chief Executive Dr Terence Hung, reflected on how ASPIRE 2B represents both how far Singapore's HPC capabilities have come and where the future of research is heading. He reaffirmed NSCC's commitment to supporting researchers with the infrastructure, expertise and resources needed to drive innovation.

The event also included data centre tours and poster presentations showcasing how advanced computing is enabling breakthroughs across research domains.

Launched 10 years after Singapore's first national supercomputer, ASPIRE 1, ASPIRE 2B represents a hundred-fold increase in compute power in just over a decade. More importantly, it marks a significant step forward in enabling researchers to tackle increasingly complex challenges in AI, engineering, healthcare, climate science and beyond.

As research continues to evolve, NSCC will continue to empower researchers to dream bigger, compute faster and innovate more boldly.

Advanced hardware requires advanced skills.

In April, we hosted the ASPIRE 2A Job Management and ASPIRE 2A+ Parallel Programming Models Advanced Workshops, bringing users together to deepen their understanding of efficient job management, parallel programming models, and best practices for scaling workloads on national supercomputing resources.

As research workflows grow more complex, practical training plays an important role in helping users make better use of advanced computing systems and translate compute capability into meaningful research outcomes.

From classroom concepts to a closer look at Singapore’s national supercomputing infrastructure. 🖥️⚡️

Last month, we welcomed students from the NUS School of Computing to our data centre for an introduction to our ASPIRE 2A and ASPIRE 2A+ systems. The session provided students with a foundational understanding of how supercomputers support large-scale scientific research across domains.

We hope the visit gave students a new perspective on the role of HPC in research and innovation, while encouraging them to take their first steps towards future opportunities in the field.

"Learn fast. Experiment boldly."

That was Yi Jiaxin’s advice for future NSCC interns.

In the world of High Performance Computing (HPC), real learning doesn't happen by playing it safe—it happens through bold experimentation and the constant iteration required to squeeze out that final 10% of optimization.

A key highlight of his internship was the development of an inference simulator to test models across various frameworks and configurations—seeing it scale effectively while remaining easy to use was a truly rewarding experience.

At NSCC, he found a supportive and human-centred environment where he was given the space, time, and resources to grow.
