What actually fits back there?

It’s the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is a range.

200 square feet is an office with a bathroom. 600 starts feeling like a home instead of a room. 900 is two people, long term. 1,500 is a full house behind your house.

The one most people don’t think about until they’re living in it: laundry.

Swipe through the sizes we build most often and what each one holds. We’re pulling all of it into a full catalog soon — more on that shortly.

Which one is closest to what you’ve pictured?

Nobody asked about square footage.

They asked about the tree in the back corner. The slope in the yard. Whether the setback still applies if the garage is already there.

That’s what a room of homeowners actually sounds like — specific, because everyone is standing on a different piece of ground.

Thank you to everyone who came out in Issaquah. The last half hour ran long, which is usually the sign it went well.

We’re running it again in Bellevue on Tuesday, November 10.

If you’ve wondered about your own backyard — what’s the part you’re actually stuck on?

Most people have already built it in their head.

The room where your mom has her coffee without anyone hovering. The office with a door that actually closes. The studio that finally gets the garage back. The quiet room your kid lands in for a couple of years while they sorts things out.

Same building, four different lives. Whichever one you reached for first probably says something about what's missing right now.

We drew twenty-four of them. Plans and dimensions go up at DreamDADU.com next month.

If you'd rather ask a person, we're in Issaquah tomorrow night. 6:00 at Gibson Hall, free, nothing sold, last half hour is questions.

The Hideaway. The Haven. The Retreat. The Lair.

Twenty-four floor plans, landing in November.

A backyard home for a parent and one for a workshop aren't the same building, even at the same square footage. So we drew both — and most of them twice.

Square footages, dimensions, and the kind of information you'd usually have to call someone to get.

"My neighbor built one, so I figured I'd look into it."

That's how most of these conversations start. And it's usually where they stall — because what worked on their lot may have nothing to do with yours.

We're holding a free session in Issaquah on October 14 to go through it plainly: what the rules allow today, what building a backyard cottage actually costs and what drives the range, and how long it takes from first conversation to finished structure. We'll also walk through a quick way to check whether your own lot is likely to qualify.

You don't need to be planning anything. Most people who come are still deciding whether it makes sense for them at all. Nothing is sold in the room, and the last half hour is entirely questions.

Wednesday, October 14 · doors 5:45, program 6:00–7:30
Gibson Hall, Issaquah · free to attend

This is one of a series we're running across Eastside communities, so if the date or the drive doesn't work, there will be another nearby.

Curious — is it the rules, the cost, or the timeline that's unclear for you?

Some things don't survive a floor plan. The light at eight in the morning. The quiet. The way a doorway feels.

Twelve seconds inside one of ours.

Would you stay, or keep looking?

Most people assume a free session run by a builder is a sales pitch. This one isn't.

Nothing gets sold in the room. No packages, no pricing sheets, no follow-up you didn't ask for. Toph speaks for about an hour, and the last half hour belongs to whatever you want to ask.

What gets covered: which rules actually apply to your lot after the last few years of changes, what a backyard home costs to build and the decisions that move that number most, and the real timeline from first conversation to finished.

Bring your property address. At the last one we pulled real lots up on screen and read them out loud, and a few people stayed after to keep going with our architects.

Tuesday, September 22 — Bothell Library, in the public meeting room. It isn't a library-run program. Doors at 5:45, program 6:00–7:30. Free, and parking is free.

Twenty-five seats, which is what keeps it a conversation rather than an audience.

Registration link in the comments.

"I don't want to be a burden."

Almost every parent says some version of it — usually right before insisting they're fine.

It's rarely about the help. It's about not wanting to become a guest in someone else's house.

That's what a backyard home is actually for. Their own front door. Their own coffee at their own hour. Their own quiet. And you, steps away, close enough to notice when something changes.

The goal was never to move them in. It was to move them closer.

If you've been turning this over, send us your address and we'll tell you what your lot can hold.
