As we enter the Spring months and wind picks up, we must be aware of what it means to work safely in high winds.

Before work begins, always perform a wind check. Walk the worksite and ask these questions before any engines start:
• Is there a wind action plan in place?
• Has all equipment been inspected?
• What is the forecast?
• What are the ground conditions?
• Are power lines a factor?

Always respect manufacturer wind limits. Wind strength increases at height; make sure you understand:
• Manufacturer limits
• The “sail effect”
• Level surface requirements
• Smooth operations
• Required exclusion zones

Secure loads and platforms to prevent the “sail effect.” High winds can turn suspended loads into serious hazards. Ensure the following specifications are met:
• Load charts
• Load weight and surface area
• Proper outriggers and cribbing
• Taglines in place
• Extra precautions at 20+ mph winds

Know when to stop work. Every worker has the ability and authority to stop work if conditions become unsafe, including:
• High wind gusts
• Loss of communication
• Contact with obstructions
• Blowing debris

When in doubt, stop work, reassess conditions, and protect everyone on site.

Meet Braden Miller, PEMB Program Manager at 3C Industries.

Born and raised in Urbana, Ohio, Braden still calls the area home. He and his wife, Amelia, share their life with two dogs; Hank and Otis, who keep things lively around the house. Before joining 3C, Braden owned a landscaping business and still enjoys spending time outdoors improving their property and tackling home projects.

In his role at 3C Industries, Braden serves as the connection point between our team, our clients, and Butler Manufacturing. He guides each PEMB project through the design process and enjoys working across multiple builds at different stages, helping bring successful structures to life.

We’re grateful for the expertise, energy, and steady leadership Braden brings to 3CI, and we’re proud to have him on our team.

Spring showers may bring May flowers, but they also bring a whole new set of safety concerns! Let’s enjoy the warmer weather but be aware of the additional safety concerns it brings.

In honor of WIC Week last week, meet Mercedes Ludlam, Superintendent at 3C Industries.

Born in California and raised in Upstate New York, Mercedes’ career has taken her and her family across the country. She and her husband have spent years working side-by-side as Superintendents while raising their two now-grown children. Off the job site, you’ll likely find her on two wheels.

Before construction, Mercedes planned to become an attorney. Instead, she took a leap into the industry—starting in the office and working her way into the field. Today, she thrives on the fast pace and challenge of being a Superintendent, and we’re proud to have her on our team.
