For the fourth consecutive year, Korte & Luitjohan Contractors has participated in the Madison County Regional Office of Education (ROE) Construction Camp. The week-long camp provides kids from 7th through 12th grades with the opportunity to get hands-on carpentry experience. K&L’s Travis Lappe was a guest instructor for two days. He worked with over a dozen 7th graders who built firewood racks. K&L also provides construction pencils to all of the participants.

K&L's marketing guy, John Goldsmith, recently brought our Construction Time story program to the Edwardsville Public Library. Youngsters had the chance to identify construction tools, try on safety helmets and vests, and sing a construction song. Construction Time is available for free to area libraries, day cares, and schools.

Southern Illinois Now (SI Now) recently hosted its Southern Illinois Leaders Breakfast on the campus of SIU-Carbondale. The featured speaker was Colonel (Ret.) Scot Heathman, CEO of the Wedge Innovation Center in Alton. Chris Kattenbraker, K&L business development representative, attended the informative program. SI Now promotes economic growth and development in the 17 southernmost Illinois counties.

K&L welcomes back Jason Schwarz as a project superintendent. Jason returns after a couple years away working for another company. He spent his first 17 years in the industry at K&L, working his way up from carpenter to superintendent. A Highland native, Jason said he is looking forward to getting back to his roots, working with old friends and making new ones.

National Construction Safety Week was held earlier this month, but for K&L, it’s a daily observance. Recently, K&L employees completed their Mobile Elevated Work Platform training by demonstrating operation of boom lifts, scissor lifts (as shown in the photo), and aerial work platforms. These lifts pose a potential hazard because they are used to elevate employees to a work area above the ground. Employees were re-trained on the hazards of operating Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) including electrocution hazards, fall hazards, tip-over hazards, and collision hazards. Gateway Safety Consulting provided the training.

Congratulations to Chris Kattenbraker on his appointment for a three-year term on the Kaskaskia Regional Port District (KRPD) board. The announcement was recently made by Governor Pritzker’s office. In March 2025, Kattenbraker was appointed to fill the final year of an unexpired term on the KRPD board. A resident of Walsh in Randolph County, Kattenbraker is a Business Development representative at Korte & Luitjohan Contractors.

The KRPD is a public port district that operates five terminals across 36 miles of the Kaskaskia River and the Mississippi River. The port system connects river, rail, and roadway assets to support economic growth in the region.
