Josh Mercier is celebrating 10 years at KL Engineering this year! He is currently Project Leader I on our Infrastructure Services team in Madison. When asked about what has impacted him the most at KL, he shared:

"What has made my 10 years at KL meaningful comes down to the people I work with and the projects we take on. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by teammates who make the work enjoyable and who support each other day in and day out. The projects themselves keep me engaged and challenged in the best ways. And honestly, one of the biggest indicators of how much I value being here is that I don’t spend Sunday nights dreading Monday. That’s not something everyone gets to say, and I’m grateful for it."

Thank you for your hard work, Josh, and for your dedication to the company. We appreciate you!

Before we were officially in fall, our Pewaukee office had a summer social!

The team took the opportunity to spend time together outside the office, celebrate summer birthdays, and say goodbye to the interns who worked in the office this summer. It was a great way to spend time together and celebrate a fun summer with the Pewaukee team!

Stormwater Week continues!

We spend a lot of time calculating how much water fits inside a pipe. Water spends considerably less time worrying about that.

When the pipes are full, streets become channels, low areas become storage, and property owners bear the brunt of the aftermath.

That’s where hydraulic modeling becomes valuable. It allows us to look beyond individual pipes and structures and better understand how water moves through the entire system, both above and below ground.

And while watching a model run can be pretty satisfying for those of us who find that sort of thing entertaining, the model itself isn’t really the point.

"The goal is to make a complicated problem easier to understand, so we can make better decisions about what to do next." - Garek Holley, PE, CFM

It's Stormwater Week!

Show me a site where water follows a property line, and I’ll show you a surveyor with a very impressive skill set.

It follows the topography. It finds the low spots. It crosses property lines, overwhelms pipes, carries pollutants downstream, and eventually ends up somewhere.

As KL Engineering continues to grow our Water Resources practice, we asked Water Resources Project Leader Garek Holley what motivates him and drives his vision for water resources engineering:

“One of the greatest, and most rewarding, challenges in water resources engineering is figuring out how the built world fits within the natural one. Unfortunately, water rarely takes the time to review our plans before deciding where it wants to go. Our job is to understand those interactions, make sense of them, and design solutions that work with the landscape while protecting people, property, and infrastructure.”

Sometimes the answer is a bigger pipe or giving water a safer place to go. Other times it’s restoring a stream, protecting a floodplain, improving water quality, or looking beyond property lines to understand what is happening across an entire watershed.

The important part is understanding the problem before designing the solution.

That’s how we’re building into Water Resources at KL Engineering.

KL Engineering often takes opportunities to sponsor local sports teams and other community groups. Recently, we sponsored a boys volleyball booth at Madison West's Rally for Regents fundraiser. This was a carnival-type event where all sports had a booth related to the sport they were representing. Our families set up a mini-volleyball net for folks to enjoy!

We had a lot of fun at the rally, and are happy to support student athletes. Thank you, Jamie Peterson, for connecting us with the team and the work you do as the head coach of the boys' volleyball team at Madison West High School!

Jon Blomquist recently attended the 2026 Storm Con, the stormwater industry's premier event connecting stormwater managers, erosion control specialists, and engineers from around North America. At the event, attendees had the opportunity to learn about green infrastructure, flood modeling and mitigation, and more. We hope your time there was valuable, Jon!
