Scaled was involved in multiple early vertical take off and landing rocket concepts in the 1990’s – one of which was building a custom aeroshell for the McDonnell Douglas DC-X. On August 18, 1993, the DC-X made its first flight – lifting off for 59 seconds and landing to complete the first vertical landing of a rocket on Earth!

In the summer of 1982, Burt Rutan, Pat Storch, and Herb Iversen had the idea for a company to build and test conceptual and research aircraft and scaled down prototypes, leading to the start of Scaled Composites: Advanced Link to Efficient Development (SCALED). On August 12th, 1982, Scaled broke ground for our first hangar!

Today there are little pieces of history from the past 44 years found throughout the Scaled hangars and offices, from manufacturing articles to historical milestone artifacts - sometimes you may not know you are standing next to something with a story.

One of these artifacts casually sits in an office space alongside some pictures on a shelf, a shovel with composite materials wrapped around the shaft and blade – the same shovel used in our groundbreaking ceremony!

During the envelope expansion for SpaceShipOne, the first time White Knight released the little spaceship from altitude so it could complete a glide flight was a significant step. The glide flight on August 7, 2003 let Scaled evaluate the initial handling qualities including a clean separation from the mothership White Knight, collect performance data of the expected subsonic flight envelope from stall to 150 knots, and land smoothly back at Mojave - teaching the team a lot about how SpaceShipOne flew and letting us move forward towards spaceflight.

The matching style of White Knight and SpaceShipOne was more than an aesthetics choice – White Knight’s cockpit was intentionally designed to incorporate identical systems so all the spacecraft systems (other than the rocket motor) could be flight qualified before SpaceShipOne ever took to the air.

With only 17 months from program start to first flight, White Knight made its first flight on August 1, 2002 followed by a test campaign to prove out the aircraft prior to the first captive carry of SpaceShipOne in 2003!

If engineering intern Justin Betanzos had to describe his internship in just three words, he’d go with “shocking, impressive, and unorthodox.”

Justin is a rising senior at Santa Clara University studying mechanical engineering. He is spending his summer as part of the Scaled team on the JetZero Demonstrator aircraft supporting internal cockpit pressure testing and tooling assembly for cockpit fixtures. While familiar with Scaled’s work through his engineering mentors, Justin felt he had a solid idea of what to expect from his internship - but the professionalism, rigor, and deep expertise of Scaled’s subject matter experts (SMEs) have exceeded those initial expectations. He expected to take on a heavy workload with high standards but didn’t anticipate how “hands-off” and trusting Scaled’s engineers would be, giving him the freedom to dive in, take ownership, and learn through real trial and error.

While Justin acknowledges his work this summer has deepened his understanding of tolerances, best practices, and industry standards for materials and specifications, his biggest takeaway for his future career has been the work environment. He’s enjoyed how Scaled engineers split their time between focused desk work and hands-on involvement on the shop floor, and he appreciates the high level of talent in the people he works alongside. It has shown him that who you’re doing the work with is just as important as the work itself. When he is not at work or working on his personal engineering projects, Justin enjoys surfing, reading, cooking, mountain biking, snowboarding, camping, and traveling. This summer, he climbed Mount Whitney and competed in a mountain bike race at Mammoth Lakes, in addition to his most recent solo trip to Patagonia National Park. His advice for future Scaled interns is to not be afraid of asking for feedback as often as possible, because the knowledge you will gain here is hard to find elsewhere!

“Really freaking cool” is what Daniel Estingoy thinks of his internship experience at Scaled this summer.

Heading into his senior year studying aerospace engineering at the University of Kansas, Daniel’s summer is being spent supporting the fuselage build for the JetZero Demonstrator - primarily by testing composite material samples to confirm performance assumptions and ensure bolted connections remain secure and reliable. He comes to Scaled with a good understanding of the work and culture thanks to a professor who is a former Scaled engineer, and he is still pleasantly surprised by the level of autonomy he is given in his tasks.

Daniel’s work this summer is strengthening his ability to create precise engineering drawings, helping him better translate complex designs into accurate, manufacturable parts. He describes his internship as a chance to sample a little bit of everything in the world of airplanes, giving him surface-level exposure to a wide range of potential career paths. Outside of work, Daniel supports his Formula Student and Design/Build/Fly teams back in Kansas remotely by working on MATLAB coding and CAD designs. He is also working toward his glider pilot license in Tehachapi, with his first solo flight happening this weekend! His advice for future Scaled interns is to ask a million questions because the engineers he works alongside have unmatched expertise and a genuine interest in helping others learn.

If you saw Proteus flying by, what would you say it looks like?

We’ve heard many descriptions of Proteus as someone tries to describe the odd-looking airplane they are looking at – a praying mantis, a dragonfly, even a Borzoi with the long droopy nose. Proteus’ configuration is an odd one, but very intentional!

Designed around the specific mission of loitering at altitude while carrying a large telecommunications dish, the configuration used landing gear spread far apart between the booms and nose to provide the space needed to carry a large structure. With long wings and canards, Proteus has low wing loading needed for efficient high altitude loiter – even when carrying a significant weight as a payload beneath the fuselage.

While the original telecommunications mission only lasted a short while, Scaled has continued to operate Proteus as a multi-mission research aircraft, taking advantage of the high-altitude capabilities and large underbody space to integrate and test a wide variety of payloads. This July 26th marks 28 years of Proteus flying!
