Water is only half of the cooling equation. Airflow matters too.

A cooling tower depends on consistent airflow through the tower to support effective heat transfer.
When airflow is reduced or uneven, one section of the tower may perform differently from another.

Potential contributors include fan condition, improper blade pitch, airflow restrictions, and other mechanical issues affecting fan performance.

That is why an uneven cooling problem should not automatically be treated as a water-side issue.
🌬️ Inspect fan condition
🌬️ Check blade condition and pitch
🌬️ Look for airflow restrictions
🌬️ Evaluate related mechanical components

Effective cooling requires the right balance of airflow and water distribution.

If part of your tower is struggling to maintain performance, a comprehensive inspection can help identify what is restricting it.

Finding a cooling tower deficiency is step one.

The next questions are often more important.

➡️ What needs attention now?
➡️ What should be monitored?
➡️ What requires additional evaluation?
➡️ And what needs to be planned for the future?

Better information helps facility, maintenance, and engineering teams establish priorities and plan the right work.

The same cooling tower issue can look very different depending on when you find it.

Identify it during the off-season, and your team may have time to evaluate the problem, determine the appropriate solution, coordinate schedules, and plan the work.

Discover it when cooling demand is high, and those options can become much more limited.

That is why proactive cooling tower maintenance is about more than preventing failures. It is about giving your facility time and options.

Fall creates an opportunity to move from:
Reactive → Planned
Urgent → Prioritized
Unexpected → Prepared

Don’t wait for peak demand to find out what needs attention.

Your cooling tower fill only works when air and water can move through it effectively.

Fill creates the surface area needed for air and water contact inside the cooling tower. When that fill becomes fouled, blocked, deteriorated, or damaged, heat transfer can suffer.

Scale, debris, and biological growth can restrict passages through the fill. Physical deterioration can also change how water and air move through sections of the tower.

The result can be inconsistent cooling and declining tower performance.
Watch for:
🔎 Visible scale or buildup
🔎 Debris accumulation
🔎 Biological growth
🔎 Crushed, sagging, or deteriorated fill
🔎 Noticeable differences between sections of the tower

Fill condition is more than a maintenance issue. It directly affects the environment where heat transfer takes place.

If fill condition is affecting tower performance, an inspection can help determine the extent of the problem and the right next steps.

Cooling Towers Are More Than Mechanical Equipment ⚙️

Cooling towers support production, occupant comfort, manufacturing processes, and business continuity.

When they aren't operating as expected, the impact extends well beyond the maintenance department.

Understanding the financial consequences of downtime can help organizations make more informed maintenance, repair, and capital planning decisions.

If you haven't read our recent article on cooling tower downtime costs, it's a valuable resource for anyone responsible for facility reliability.

The biggest advantage of preventive cooling tower maintenance may not be the maintenance itself.

It is the time it gives you.

Time to identify developing mechanical issues.

Time to evaluate wear before it becomes a larger repair.

Time to plan work around operations instead of reacting to an unexpected problem.

And time to make better decisions about what your cooling tower needs next.

Preventive maintenance is not just about completing a list of tasks. It is an opportunity to better understand equipment condition and stay ahead of issues that can affect reliability.

đź“° We recently shared 10 reasons facilities should prioritize preventive cooling tower service.

Peak cooling season is winding down. What did it reveal about your cooling tower?

The end of peak demand is a good time to take a closer look at the condition of your system.

A post-season cooling tower evaluation can help identify concerns involving:
🔍 Structural condition
⚙️ Mechanical components
đź’§ Water distribution
🌬️ Fill and airflow
🦺 Safety and access

The goal is not simply to find problems. It is to understand what needs attention, prioritize repairs, and build a plan before the cooling tower is operating under peak demand again.

Finding an issue now gives you time to plan what comes next.

What is on your post-season cooling tower checklist?

Not every part of your cooling tower may be getting the same amount of water.

Poor water distribution can create performance differences across a cooling tower, even when the system appears to be operating normally.

Clogged, damaged, or misaligned nozzles can prevent water from being distributed evenly across the fill. Some areas may receive too much water, while others receive too little.

When that happens, the tower cannot use the full fill area as effectively for heat transfer.

Things worth checking include:
đź’§ Clogged or damaged spray nozzles
đź’§ Uneven spray patterns
đź’§ Distribution piping condition
đź’§ Areas of fill that appear unusually wet or dry

Uneven cooling may be the symptom. The distribution system could be where the problem starts.

Over the past three months, we've talked about evaluating repair quotes, recognizing rebuild opportunities, reducing project risk, and planning with confidence.

If there's one takeaway we'd encourage every facility team to remember, it's this:
Before approving a cooling tower repair or rebuild project, ask:
➡️ What was inspected?
➡️ What's included?
➡️ What's excluded?
➡️ What assumptions were made?
➡️ What could impact the final project cost?

Those conversations before work begins often determine how smoothly the project goes once it starts.
