From Scrap to Sky: A Journey Toward Cleaner Recycling
Industry- Recycling Process

Location- Colton, CA

Application- Accommodate production increases from the recycling process by treating volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions generated from the recycling plant’s operations.

Overview

A comprehensive metal recycling facility requested a unique Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) design. Our design achieves 98% destruction efficiency and greater than 95% thermal effectiveness of VOCs such as Alcohol, MEK, and Toluene produced at their recycling plant. The implementation of an RTO helps the plant comply with regional air quality requirements and industry standards, while performing at a highly efficient level. The unit’s ability to run at the capacity of their operational output results in overall utility savings too.
The recycling plant adheres to high industry standards to maximize the profits and minimize the environmental impact of their clients through their circular supply chain. Their promise is ensured by the RTO from Ship & Shore Environmental which allows the plant to maximize the energy efficiency of their recycling plant and minimize their own environmental impacts while maximizing profits.

Solution

The RTO best fit for this plant heats VOCs to full oxidation temperature with very little additional energy required. Supplying the RTO with a hot gas bypass stack allows the system to respond to differing VOC concentrations and allows some of the combustion products to exit the exhaust stack to ensure a stable temperature for the oxidation process to occur.

The new 31,000 SCFM RTO engineered for emission control and
energy optimization includes key design elements such as:

• High-efficiency ceramic media for advanced heat recovery
• Hot bypass system to effectively adjust functions for differing VOC concentrations
• Air quality permit assistance
• Provisions for future additions of stack heat exchanger and a hot bypass stack to accommodate ever increasing production at the plant
• Assistance with customized incentive applications to maximize the benefits of installing an RTO
Expected Results
• Lower overall operating costs
• 98% destruction efficiency of VOCs produced at the plant
• Improved air quality for the community surrounding the plant
• Meeting regional air quality requirements and

We talk a lot about what we can see and hear in our environment. But what about what we smell?

A fascinating new piece from Yale Environment 360 by Hannah Thomasy explores how air pollution, fertilizers, and fungicides are quietly reshaping the chemical signals that plants and animals depend on to survive — from bees finding flowers to moths locating mates. In heavily polluted regions, a moth's ability to detect a flower has dropped to just a quarter of what it was in preindustrial times.

It's a powerful reminder that environmental harm often operates invisibly — in the chemical layers of the air we share with every living thing. The case for cleaner air goes far deeper than human health alone.

A growing body of research shows how air pollution, fertilizers, and fungicides are altering the chemical signals that plants and animals use to communicate. Scientists warn that insect reproduction, foraging, navigation, and even the pollination of crops could be affected.

🔧 : Protecting the Heartbeat of Your RTO

When discussing Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs), attention is often focused on combustion chambers, ceramic media, heat recovery, and VOC destruction rates. Yet some of the most influential components in the system are often overlooked: the valves and actuators that control airflow throughout the oxidizer.

Every cycle, these components direct process exhaust through heat recovery chambers and the combustion zone, enabling RTOs to achieve thermal efficiencies approaching 95% and VOC destruction efficiencies exceeding 99%. When valves become worn, misaligned, or fail to seal properly, the effects can quickly ripple throughout the entire system.

A leaking or improperly positioned valve can allow untreated exhaust to bypass the oxidation process, reducing emissions control performance and increasing operating costs. In severe cases, recurring valve issues have caused repeated shutdowns, production interruptions, and compliance concerns.

Electric actuators present their own challenges. Faulty wiring, failed limit switches, damaged gears, power interruptions, or communication errors can prevent valves from reaching their intended positions. Because modern RTOs rely on precise sequencing, even a minor actuator malfunction can trigger safety interlocks and force the system offline.

Pneumatic systems are equally vulnerable. Insufficient air pressure, moisture contamination, clogged filters, corroded solenoids, and deteriorated seals can restrict valve movement or create internal leakage paths. These issues disrupt airflow balance, reduce heat recovery effectiveness, and place additional demand on the burner.

The impact can be significant:

✔ Lower VOC destruction performance
✔ Increased fuel consumption
✔ Unplanned downtime and lost production
✔ Accelerated component wear
✔ Greater compliance risk
✔ Higher operating costs

Fortunately, most valve-related failures can be prevented through proactive maintenance. Regular inspections, stroke testing, actuator verification, air-system checks, and calibration reviews help identify developing problems before they become costly events. Monitoring cycle times, actuator performance, and valve sealing conditions can also provide early warning signs of deterioration.

While valves may represent only a small portion of an RTO's overall footprint, they play an outsized role in reliability, efficiency, and environmental performance. Giving these components the attention they deserve helps maximize uptime, control operating expenses, and maintain consistent compliance.

Small components. Massive impact. Protect the heartbeat of your RTO before minor valve issues become major operational challenges.

Every Spin Leaves a Signature in the Air!

Dip spin coating is widely used to apply corrosion-resistant and protective finishes to fasteners and metal components. While the process appears simple, solvent-based coatings can generate volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions that may require air pollution controls to meet environmental regulations.

A typical dip spin operation includes coating storage and mixing, parts cleaning, coating application, curing, and cooling. Although emissions are generated throughout the process, curing ovens are often the largest VOC source because elevated temperatures drive solvents from the coating film into the exhaust stream.

Where Emissions Are Generated?

After cleaning, parts are submerged into a coating bath and rotated to distribute the coating while allowing excess material to drain back into the reservoir. Solvent evaporation begins during this stage and continues as coated parts move through transfer areas and into the curing oven.

For this reason, coating stations, curing ovens, and coating preparation areas are typically the primary focus when evaluating VOC control requirements.

Effective Emission Collection

The success of any VOC control system depends on proper capture before emissions reach the atmosphere.

A well-designed collection system may include:

• Coating tank enclosures
• Oven exhaust collection
• Transfer area ventilation
• Particulate filtration
• Integrated ductwork networks

Proper collection improves overall system performance and protects downstream equipment from contamination.

Why RTO Technology Is Commonly Used?

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) are one of the most effective technologies for treating VOC emissions from dip spin coating operations.

Operating temperatures typically range from 1,450°F to 1,500°F, allowing destruction efficiencies greater than 98%. High-efficiency ceramic heat exchange media recovers thermal energy from the exhaust stream and returns it to the process, often achieving thermal efficiencies above 95%.

This heat recovery significantly reduces natural gas consumption and operating costs. In some applications, the energy value within the process exhaust can further reduce burner demand.

More Than Compliance

Successful projects consider emission capture, airflow management, production requirements, and energy efficiency as part of a complete control strategy.

An additional advantage of high-efficiency RTO systems is potential eligibility for utility-sponsored energy incentive programs. Advanced heat recovery and reduced fuel consumption are often key factors evaluated by qualifying providers.

At Ship & Shore Environmental, we work with manufacturers and OEMs to develop practical VOC control solutions that support compliance, operational efficiency, and long-term reliability.

🔧 AM Monday: OEM Parts Keep Operations Moving. Generic Parts Keep Problems Moving.

When an air pollution control system fails, the impact goes far beyond maintenance costs. Unexpected downtime can interrupt production, increase emissions risk, affect compliance, and create expensive operational delays. Yet many facilities still rely on generic replacement parts to reduce short-term costs.

RTOs, scrubbers, DFTOs, and related emission control systems operate under demanding thermal and mechanical conditions. Components such as burners, actuators, thermocouples, valves, sensors, and PLC hardware are engineered for exact operating tolerances. Generic or “equivalent” parts may appear compatible, but differences in calibration, material quality, temperature resistance, or dimensional fit can negatively impact system reliability and performance.

What Can Go Wrong?

Using incorrect or lower-grade replacement parts may result in:

Unstable burner performance and inconsistent combustion
Reduced VOC destruction efficiency from airflow or temperature imbalance
Increased natural gas and electrical consumption
Premature wear on valves, actuators, and critical assemblies
Unexpected shutdowns from communication or control failures
Increased compliance exposure from unstable operating conditions

Even small deviations can gradually reduce thermal efficiency and long-term reliability.

Why OEM Parts Matter

Ship & Shore Environmental OEM spare parts are selected specifically for each system’s operating requirements. Every component is matched to the original engineering design to ensure proper fit, thermal compatibility, and dependable operation.

OEM components provide:

Accurate integration with combustion and control systems
Materials designed for high-temperature environments
Reduced troubleshooting and installation time
Reliable performance and equipment protection

Most importantly, OEM support removes the uncertainty of cross-referencing parts that may not fully match system requirements.

More Than Spare Parts

At Ship & Shore Environmental, support goes beyond supplying hardware. Our engineering and service teams review operating conditions, maintenance history, and system configuration to identify which spare parts are truly critical to keep onsite.

A missing or incorrect component can quickly turn a routine issue into extended downtime.

Why It Matters

Air pollution control equipment is engineered as an integrated system. Replacing critical components with non-OEM alternatives introduces unnecessary operational and compliance risk.

The right spare parts strategy protects:

System reliability
Energy efficiency
VOC destruction performance
Equipment lifespan
Regulatory compliance
