What if engineering could help us understand how cancer grows? 🧬🔬 FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Assistant Professor Tristan Driscoll is bringing his expertise in mechanobiology (the study of how physical forces affect cells) to a $2.8 million National Cancer Institute-funded study on pancreatic cancer. Working with researchers across medicine, engineering and cancer biology, the team is studying how changes in cell shape, pressure and structure may influence tumor progression.

As a co-investigator on the multidisciplinary project, Driscoll will help measure mechanical forces between epithelial cells and at the nuclear envelope, providing insight into how changes in lumen pressure and cell structure may affect cancer behavior. The research brings together engineering, cancer biology, mathematical modeling and pathology to examine the relationship between cellular mechanics and tumor progression, with the potential to identify new vulnerabilities that could inform future therapeutic strategies.

Manish Mandal, a fourth-year doctoral candidate at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, has been named one of just six doctoral students worldwide to receive the 2026 IEEE CSC Graduate Study Fellowship in Applied Superconductivity. 🎓⚡

“Being recognized by the selection committee among such a talented global community of researchers is deeply humbling. It is a testament not only to the hard work... but also to the exceptional mentorship and collaborative environment at the college,” Mandal said.

Under the mentorship of Professor David Larbalestier at the Applied Superconductivity Center, Mandal is researching ways to improve Nb₃Sn (niobium-tin) superconductors so they can power stronger, more efficient magnets. His work could contribute to technologies ranging from MRI machines and particle accelerators to future nuclear fusion systems. His journey from Nepal and India to Japan and now the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory shows how curiosity can open doors to the future of engineering.

What if AI could help make our power grid smarter, more reliable and less expensive? Researchers at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and CAPS developed GridFusionX, an AI-powered forecasting tool designed to help utility operators better predict electricity demand and renewable energy generation.

In tests across 10 European regions, GridFusionX improved forecasting accuracy by up to 56% and reduced reserve costs by as much as 66%. By making energy predictions more precise, the technology could help utilities respond to changes in demand and renewable generation while reducing unnecessary costs. The research also gives engineering students hands-on experience at the intersection of AI, renewable energy and power systems, helping prepare the next generation to build a smarter energy future.

This summer, student Pranathi Brungi earned her doctorate in electrical and computer engineering after completing both her master’s and Ph.D. in just three and a half years. A native of South India, she was drawn to FSU by the college’s partnership with Florida A&M University and its nationally recognized research in power electronics.

During her time at FAMU-FSU Engineering, she conducted interdisciplinary research in semiconductor devices, magnetics and machine learning, presented her work at national conferences, earned the Danfoss Research Scholarship and even represented FSU during a weather balloon launch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
