SAIMI is honoured to have had an opportunity to contribute to the Oceans Economy Conference and Expo 2026, held under the theme: "Protecting Our Seas: Maritime Security”, where maritime leaders from across South Africa and the African continent gathered to explore solutions for maritime security and sustainable ocean development.

Dr Nomtha Hadi contributed to discussions on safeguarding South Africa's ports, sea lanes, and trade corridors, whilst Dr Malwande Nkalitshana highlighted the importance of building a future-ready maritime workforce.

SAIMI proudly congratulates the Sail Africa team on their outstanding performance in the Vasco da Gama Ocean Race.

The team of four young women, alongside instructors Ben Makhanya and MK Chiliza aboard Spirit of Anna Wardley, won the Marlow Trophy, Rubicon Trophy for outstanding seamanship, and the Choose Life Junior Trophy that was awarded to 17-year-old Thembeka Dlamini.

REPOA is a leading independent research institution and think tank based in Tanzania, that focuses on generating cutting-edge research to inform evidence-based socioeconomic policies, promote poverty alleviation, and drive sustainable development in East Africa.

SAIMI participated in the Building Partnerships for a Sustainable Blue Economy: Maritime Transport workshop, held on 18–19 May 2026, in Cape Town.
The dialogue, hosted by the French Embassy and the Institute for Security Studies, gathered key stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and international partners to strengthen collaboration in South Africa’s maritime transport sector.
Discussions focused on advancing technology and digitalisation, seafarer training and skills development, and the decarbonisation of shipping.
