SAIMI participated in the Skills for a Lifetime – The NCV Journey Career Summit, hosted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre on 5–6 August 2026 in Gqeberha.

The Summit, targeted at Grade 8 and 9 learners, educators and relevant stakeholders, served as a platform for raising awareness about careers in the maritime sector, and sharing information on education, training, and employment opportunities within South Africa's oceans economy.

SAIMI is honoured to be the co-host of the 16th Biennial Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa (AASA) Conference that being is held at Mpekweni Beach Resort (Eastern Cape) from 4-6 August 2026.

Conference proceedings officially commenced with a keynote address by Deputy Minister Hon. Narend Singh, who highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in unlocking South Africa's aquaculture potential, strengthening the sector, and creating opportunities for future generations.

As part of the conference programme, SAIMI in partnership with Marifeed, also hosted a student workshop on "Career Pathways in Aquaculture and Transitioning from Academia”.

Only 4 Days to Go!

The countdown continues! We're excited to introduce Dr. Phil James as another keynote speaker at the 16th Biennial Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa (AASA) Conference.

Dr. Phil James is a Senior Scientist at Nofima in Tromsø, Norway. With more than 32 years of experience in low-trophic aquaculture across New Zealand and Norway, his research has focused on sea urchins, lobsters, and seaweeds.

From 2019 to 2024, Dr. James coordinated the EU Horizon 2020 AquaVitae project, which aimed to unlock the potential of low-trophic aquaculture across the Atlantic. The project brought together stakeholders from 35 institutions across 16 countries, driving international collaboration and innovation in sustainable aquaculture.

We look forward to the valuable insights Dr. James will share as we gather to explore the future of aquaculture in Africa.

We can't wait to welcome all our delegates to the beautiful Eastern Cape for what promises to be an inspiring few days of learning, collaboration, and connection.

As a tenured research professor at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), Prof. Maria J. Darias is internationally recognised for her work advancing nutrition-sensitive marine aquaculture in low- and middle-income countries.

She is the co-director of LIMAQUA-African Interdisciplinary Laboratory in Sustainable Nutrition-Sensitive Marine Aquaculture and coordinates AfriMAQUA, the Network for Nutrition-Sensitive Marine Aquaculture in Africa, bringing together researchers, industry, and policymakers to shape the future of sustainable aquaculture across Africa.

We look forward to welcoming Prof. Maria J. Darias as she shares her expertise, insights, and vision with delegates from across academia, industry, and government.
