As battery storage becomes increasingly integrated into utility-scale renewable developments, wind projects are beginning to follow a path already well established in solar.

Following the discussions at the Australian Wind Industry Forum, our Managing Director Marija Petkovic was quoted in Renew Economy on how developers are increasingly considering battery storage from the earliest stages of wind project development.

The article explores:

▶️ Why more wind developers are incorporating batteries into project designs from day one.

▶️ How hybrid configurations can improve project economics.

▶️ What this trend could mean for the future of wind development in the NEM.

As battery costs continue to fall and market conditions evolve, wind and battery hybrids may become just as common as solar and battery hybrids.

RWE's 50 MW / 400 MWh Limondale Battery Energy Storage System in NSW has received approval to commence full operations.

The project is notable as Australia's first operational eight-hour battery, marking an important milestone for long-duration storage in the NEM.

For developers, understanding how battery duration influences project economics, operational performance, and commercial arrangements remains an important part of battery project development.

🔍 How we can help
The Energy Synapse Platform tracks the operation, economics, and offtakes/underwriting arrangements of every battery in the NEM, helping developers stay informed on project activity and market developments.

CIS Tender 9 – NEM Generation is now open for bid submissions.

This tender is seeking an indicative target of 5 GW of renewable energy generation across the NEM, with registrations closing on 6 July and bids due on 20 July.

NSW projects are ineligible for this tender due to previous CIS allocation outcomes, while solar-only projects in Victoria will be limited to 0.47 GW.

As developers prepare bids, understanding revenue performance and outcomes under different market scenarios will remain an important part of assessing project competitiveness.

🔍 How Energy Synapse can help
We support developers participating in CIS tenders through independent, data-driven analysis, including revenue modelling under the CISA cap-and-collar framework, price forecasting, scenario analysis, and project configuration optimisation.

Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tender 7 results are now out!

The Australian Government has selected 19 projects under CIS Tender 7 – NEM Generation, supporting a combined 7.8 GW of renewable generation capacity across the NEM, well above the original 5 GW target. Eight of the successful projects were hybrids, adding 7.9 GWh of storage capacity.

The round was also heavily oversubscribed, receiving 53 bids representing 18.6 GW of proposed capacity.

You can comprehensively track all power projects under development in the NEM using the Energy Synapse Platform, including seeing which ones have won CIS, LTESA and REZ Access Rights tenders.

In the first 10 months of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, more than 380,000 residential batteries were installed across Australia, adding over 10 GWh of distributed storage capacity.

The scheme reduces upfront battery costs for households, accelerating adoption alongside rooftop solar.

For utility-scale battery developers, growing behind-the-meter storage could increasingly influence evening demand profiles and arbitrage spreads, reinforcing the need to test revenue assumptions against a wider range of residential battery uptake scenarios.

Energy Synapse provides market and revenue modelling services for utility-scale renewable and battery projects, helping developers evaluate revenue potential and optimise system sizing under evolving market conditions.

Should you add AC coupled or DC coupled battery storage to your solar farm? ☀️ 🔋

This is a question Energy Synapse helps developers with everyday through our modelling services. Here's what we are finding:

▶️ DC coupled hybrids are becoming popular for greenfield developments due to higher efficiencies and potential for CAPEX savings. However, developers should carefully consider the operational implications, especially when registered under a single DUID.

▶️ AC coupling is the most popular choice for solar retrofits, as this configuration tends to make the BESS integration eaiser/more straight forward.

We will discuss hybrids (both solar/BESS and wind/BESS) in more detail in our upcoming 2-day training course on Commercial Opportunities for Battery Storage in the NEM scheduled in Sydney on 14-15 May 2026.
