Concrete needs time to properly cure, and a few simple habits can help prevent cracks, flaking, and costly repairs.
🚫 Avoid driving on new concrete – Concrete takes about 28 days to reach 80% of its strength, so avoid driving or placing heavy items on it during this period.
πŸ§‚ Skip salt and ice-melting chemicals – During the first year, de-icing chemicals can damage curing concrete. Instead, shovel snow regularly and prevent ice buildup.
πŸ’§ Remove excess water – Garage floors are designed with a slight 2–3% slope, but some water may still remain from melting snow. Use a squeegee to remove standing water and protect your walls and floor.
🧹 Keep expansion joints clean – Dirt and ice can block joints and prevent proper drainage. Clean them regularly so water can flow freely and help reduce cracking.

Planning a legal basement suite or secondary suite in Calgary or Edmonton? Here are some of the most important safety requirements homeowners need to know:

Every bedroom must have a window large enough for a safe emergency escape. The City requires a minimum opening of 0.35 mΒ², with no dimension less than 380 mm, plus proper window well clearance.
πŸšͺ Smoke-Tight Separation
The suite must be separated from the main dwelling with smoke-tight construction. This includes specific drywall requirements, sealed joints, and properly protected penetrations and doors.
πŸ”₯ Mechanical & Furnace Room Requirements
Mechanical rooms must be fully enclosed with a fire-rated door, and your exit route cannot pass through them. Additionally, all units must have independent HVAC systemsβ€”this can be accomplished by having a separate furnace or, if space is limited, separate air systems.
🚨 Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Properly located, interconnected smoke and CO alarms are required to meet current safety codes.

We recently completed this custom 24 Γ— 24 garage for a great client and it turned into a really unique build.

Because the homeowner wanted a 14 Γ— 24 mezzanine loft, the project required a development permit with a height relaxation as well as a retaining wall. Our team handled the design, engineered plans, and the city approval process to make it all come together.

One of the standout features is the motorized stair system that lifts out of the way so vehicles can still park underneath, then lowers when access to the loft is needed. The garage also includes a heater, full insulation and drywall, and a deck space to make it a comfortable and functional shop.
